People have to remember that back then man had no vehicles to get around, he/she walked everywhere and for many miles. Building ginormous structures would actually help humans find their way back to cities, if they travelled many miles then needed to return. This was true even in the times of early ship sailing. Massive structures were built so that humans could navigate their way back to the correct (and safest) harbours and ports. This is highly likely of most of the largest ancient stone structures throughout the world. People sometimes had to hunt far and wide for most of the day for food sources. These places were meant to be seen from far far away.

Isn Dury's song... " There ain't half been some clever bastards ", says it all. There is a stupid assumption that if something advanced exists from an ancient time, everyone at that time, understood the technology, ie that it was common knowledge. This does not automatically follow, though, and it is more likely that individuals, or small groups of individuals had achieved expertise in some engineering that was esoteric, and definitely not shared widely. Anyone discovering something groundbreaking would naturally often hesitate to share this knowledge, and in all likelihood would be " burnt as a witch ", so to soeak. Much knowledge would have been restricted to small groups and kept secret out of necessity so that the benefits of such findings could be preserved for those who would best use it.
