I found your channel in December when I wanted to learn how to build an ultralight. Your channel made me feel that there are so many more possibilities. It may be years before I get a plane, but I hope ine day I will at least get to fly a plane for the first time.

You are really good at explaining things in layman terms. That makes absorbing the information so much easier.

Your video's are very well put together, you are really engaging in front of the camera, I have always loved flying and hopefully will own an ultralight and be able to fly it from my property, it's awesome that you take time to share your experience with everyone, keep it up mate. Regards from Australia, we are required to get a licence for an ultralight in oz

I am learning how to fly a trike. I only have 8 1/2 hours. I am halfway to solo. I am learning hot to fly a trike after I built one. I like your channel, I'm glad I found it. I am all into ultralights and ultralight trikes. Learning how to fly a trike is so backwards from a fixed wing aircraft. So transitioning into a fixed wing is a whole lot easier that going from a fixed wing to a trike. Training, training, training.

Good advice; I started my flight training in a FlightStar IISC w/ HKS engine. Fun plane; seemed to climb just fine, even on hot days w/ a 3200 foot field elevation. When I continued/finished my Sport Pilot training, I flew the Flight Design CTLS, which required "adjusting some skills" I learned on the F.S.; I think w/ any kind of flying it's a "calculated risk", but many days I felt safer in the cabin of the CT, than driving on the freeways. It's interesting the many more choices available in ultralights, vs. 40-50 years ago; even a few w/ four-stroke engines (Legal Eagle, Backyard Flyer, Hummel UC...)

I think ultralights are very cool. And definitely a gateway to aviation. But without training I can see that it is dangerous. Can you make a video on how to get that training. Not just the book work but how can you train for flying an ultralight?

They are typically very safe. They become dangerous when the pilots operates them inappropriatly and make modifications where they don't know what they are doing. I noticed a FB post of someone who made a modification to a legal eagle he bought... A mod that would have likely caused his early demise but he saw sense. It's very rare for an aircraft to crash because of a failure and when they do, that failure is usually because of poor maintenance.

👍🏼👍🏼 Very well said! I would also like to suggest that changing out the "pulse line" that runs from the engines crankcase to the mechanical diaphragm type fuel pump every year is great and dirt cheap insurance to help avoid fuel delivery issues. Personally, I would also change my diaphragm fuel pumps and fuel lines every year. Blue skies, my fellow aviators!

Jon, you do a good job and have content. Keep it up and block the haters that’s what I do in my channel

Since the engine with two carburetors will run very poorly on one carburetor, that engine simply doubles the chance of having engine trouble. Tens of thousands of aircraft engines have only one carburetor.

How many ultralights have fatalities vs. General aviation aircraft? It seems like general avaiation personal aircraft are crashing all the time

So your saying, if Joe B. just buys one, takes off and crashes cause he watched a video they are dangerous? Or if Don T. was trained by a CFI and flys without incident even with an engine failure it's not cause he actually had some real UL training? You always do a great job Jon!

Brilliant 👌 Q: what is the smaller ultralight?

I would have to add: In the late 70's there came a flood of ultralight aircraft companies. Some with many poor design issues. Many with very bad consequences. Be very careful of ultralight barn finds. Know what you are buying.
I will also agree with comment: Many people hear the statement. "You don't need a license for ultralights." Lots and Lots of accidents are from newbies. Thinking they can fly and find it's a whole new world. All when they are in trouble and zero knowledge how to correct in flight problems. Normally ending in a bad event.
Most Ultralights are underpowered, which is in my opinion is the dangerous part. Many have a low stall speed and a low rate of climb. Not much room for margin. FAA needs to update the limits of such aircraft. It's now 2025 and the rules are a little behind. Interstate speeds driving went from 55 mph to 85 mph in some places. At least FAA should allow a little more HP and more fuel capacity. Of course, more weight and speed are the byproduct.
