A natural makeup tutorial for (real) aging women over 40 and UP. Because I think there is not enough inspiration in the media for women over 40, made by women over 40, I asked my good friend and colleague Esther van Maanen (48) to create this natural makeup tutorial for &Bloom.

I’ve known Esther for many years and worked with her on many photo shoots. A while ago I asked her if she could give me some makeup tips for different occasions. After giving birth to my son at age 40 and my, due to aging, changing skin, I’ve been having some trouble with my old makeup ways. My skin is (of course) different from when I was 35.

The advice Esther gave me, helped me a lot to make slight changes to my own routines. I thought it would be a great idea to show you how Esther applies her own looks on her beautiful self because she is such a beautiful natural aging woman.

In this tutorial the first look: Natural Makeup for fierce women over 40 (and up).

Esther:

“Personally, I think that the perfect and most beautiful natural makeup is one where you can see the effect, but where the products are applied almost invisibly. When I apply a natural makeup on myself, I almost always choose for the accent on my eyes and keep my lips calm.

Of course it all starts with beautiful skin, so the base of the makeup is very important. Never skip the base because it will bring peace to your face! Unfortunately, many women that are afraid that it will look like they wear too much makeup (the famous pancake effect … ), but that is usually due to the wrong foundation and over-applying. When getting older it is often necessary to use a good base makeup to cover up certain spots of even fine lines, but it is important not to over do it. So choose your face primer, foundation, concealer and powder well, or get some personal advice.

From this quiet, almost invisible base makeup, you will apply your accents using a blush, eyeshadows, some natural lip colors, etc. You will see that you might even work lighter and softer because you need less to top your troubled skin complexion than if you don’t use a base. For the more mature skin, it’s important to really keep it transparent. Be careful with powder, a too heavy and too dull base makeup makes you unnecessarily older!

To apply a natural looking makeup you don’t have to spend much time in front of the mirror, so no excuses not to fit it into your busy daily schedule! 🙂 All the products I used in this natural makeup are mentioned below.”

Esther used the following products:

foundation primer radiance by Laura Mercier
skin veil by Ellis Faas
concealer by Ellis Faas
secret blurring powder for under eyes by Laura Mercier
airbrush flawless finish by Charlotte Tilbury
brow lift pencil by Charlotte Tilbury
exaggereyes by Charlotte Tilbury
contour palette by MAC

classic pencil by Charlotte Tilbury
modern twist kajal liner by MAC
hot gossip lip pencil by Charlotte Tilbury

I love the look. It's put together and beautiful without it changing her natural look.

THANK YOU ladies for making this video! I modeled full-time for 6 years in my 30's -- over 20 years ago. That was many moons ago and ever since then I've felt intimidated at doing my own makeup. Consequently I don't do much besides applying a bright red lip, which feels pretty boring. This tutorial truly motivated me. For starters I want to buy some little sponges and try coverage underneath my eyes. I also want to rethink lip liner application. Encore! Encore! 🙏💐💐.

Thank you for the tutorial just what I needed the more natural look.
However, you do look fabulous without the make up.

Thank u for sharing your knowledge and experience. I strggle with primer and concealer mainly. I have had acne since 14 and my skin is scarred and textured. I think I am hopeless with make-up.

The effect is pleasing, just feels like a lot of steps and products, which are or are not toxic.

Oh I just LOVED this first tutorial ✨
I can’t wait to see them all ! What a beautiful lady with and w/o makeup . What I enjoyed so much was how truly simplistic she made the entire process . I learned quite a few new ideas 🤗. I am so excited to try what I’ve learned such as my brows ! I always started applying my powder at the beginning of my brows, not at the arch, so I’m going to switch up on that . I also was not aware of the pencil she used on her lower lid water line that really did open up the eye ! As for the lips, I have very thin lips and what I would give to have those gorgeous plump lips 👄.... but I don’t . I would love some tips on making thinner lips look more plump ✨.
Fantastic first video . It was beautiful to watch and I learned quite a lot . BRAVO 👏🏽 Thank you so much ✨🙌🏽🙌🏽🙌🏽✨. 😘

Lovely makeup and artist! But I also must mention the cool bracelets in the intro. I love retro bracelets like those and that's a great collection.

Jeetje Mina, echt mooi zeg!!

This is epic. You really looked natural. The only thing i wonder about is your brow bone. My eyes have much smaller brow bones so i don't think I can afford to ignore them. But I really loved this transformation. Age 43, Trinidad and Tobago

Perfect! Exactly what I was looking for.
I too am ginger, grey eyes, freckles and over FINALLY a tutorial that doesn't make me look unnatural. :) Pigment on me makes me look fake, and I have found that as I age, I require make up to make certain adjustments. I am outside in nature almost constantly, and most make up looks great under bathroom lights, but once outside it looks ghastly (at least on me). Thank you again, for this great tutorial. Glad I found it. :) Sending gratitude and good vibes from Muskoka Ontario Canada.
