Confused about how helical inserts work? In this video, Bob talks about how EZ Lok's Helicoil helical inserts work and demonstrates the step-by-step process of how to install them into a block of stainless steel to make or repair your own threading!

Helical inserts are used to reinforce and repair tapped holes in soft metals. If you want to increase the integrity of your application, repair a stripped thread, or are working with soft metals, make sure you’re using helical inserts.

To breake off the tang, you normaly have to use a seperate punch, not the shown tool.

He didn't set the tool stop (which is loosened using an Allen wrench) so that the tang was positioned halfway between the tool slot as the directions say. and he didn't screw the bolt all the way down in because he couldn't because the Helicoil likely jumped some threads and so he has to re-do it.

now the big question, where did the little broken off piece go? if you are working on an engine. does it fall in the crank case? how can you do this safe?

I love the tangential dialogue. 3 step process and you act like your launching a satellite

Why do I feel like Bob uses the phrase, "sleep with the fishes" a lot?

The videos from the helicoil company says once helicoil is set turning the tool it bend that piece around and you don't break anything off

Must be his first THREAD COIL job - did not check to see if coil "jumped threads" had to break tang with WAY too much impact, bolt did not thread all the way into the coil

I'm using this on my out drive gimbal housing. Two studs broke off in the housing. Gonna drill them out and try this. I just bought a whole kit on amazon for $70.

I have a question at 3:33-3:43 please. What size tap do you use for a 1/4-20 helicoil?

Whats the point of the coil imsert if you are tapping it anyway?

what should be the relationship between helicoil diameter and hole diameter ?

The tongue of helicoil is cut or just bend it towards inner of hole?

You installed the coil in a fresh thread. How does it work in a striped thread and how do you size that?

So if you screw up the threads in something you have to tap and die to a bigger size? Then put a helicoil in and go back with the original bolt? If I have a size ten metric bolt what size kit would I need to be able to rethread the same size bolt, as the bolt is special and is designed to hold onto a different nut above it. For lawnmower magneto.

I have a bit of a difficult issue. I have some stripped threads in a door closer and the holes are less than .375". I have to drill them out, then place the coil but the coil is going to be too long already, and that little tab is going to be a problem. Can't insert without it, but it will be in the way once inserted. I need 100% of those threads and can't afford to lose the thickness of that tab. I can't drill the hole deeper because there's a risk of hitting the internal chamber causing a massive oil leak from the closer, and these are very heavy 11' tall doors.

is the coil so important ? can't we just use the tapper and put the screws on instead of using the coil, that is the advantages of using the coil ?
