In this video I go over what food plot was the best food plot during the 2024 deer season. Over the 2900 acres I plant corn, soybeans, lab-lab, annual clovers, perennial clovers, turnips, radishes, winter wheat, cereal rye, and oats. which one did the very best for attracting more deer consistently throughout the entire rut???

First time food plotter here in Louisiana. Planted iron & clay peas in spring only to have them demolished when they became a few inches tall. My winter plot is doing good!! I’m gonna try the sunflowers next spring. Thanks for making it exciting!

That's amazing wes, seems like mother nature always plays a role. Diversity is going to increase our success. Thanks for sharing

Great information. Sounds like a new spot to place a game camera. Thanks again Wes for doing this video

I use to add Iron and Clay peas into my food plot mixes to bow hunt early on. Where I am now, the plots are pretty small so I usually never see the actual plant because they get nipped off at germ.

Same thing happened here in middle Tn. Soybeans were harvested and the beans that hit the ground sprouted and the deer were absolutely hammering them because we didn’t get a frost.

A crazy weather year for sure. For the 2023 season, I planted oats, wheat and rye which the deer loved and i eventually took a 6 and 1/2 year old, 11 pointer. This year, and partially due to the drought, I cultivated the existing clovers under those grain crops with mowing and spraying of clethodim. I had four beautiful fields of clover that was magazine photo worthy. Yet, the deer were not impressed. Just a few does visited my plots and it seems like the big bucks that were around in September have moved on. Going into gun season, I thought I had the magic spot but ended up with a strike out. I'll probably go back to grains next year.

Everyone has to try & hunt the great state of Ohio! We have a lousy 7 day gun hunt, if you work 5 days of the gun season, you get a massive 2 days! Great job Ohio! I have to move from this state after living here my whole life!

I tried to plant a small plot of sunflowers one spring and the deer demolished them before they got more than a couple of inches tall. I'm convinced they like them better than most any other food.

Appreciate the observation for the results of your food plots. But how about sharing the pics of the bucks taken off your plots this year and have the Plot Professor estimation of the average ages and points of the racks your hunters harvested? Were most of the bucks in the 2 1/2---3 1/2 age category and in the 8 to 10 point range?

In Northern Ny rifle season closed today. I'm 6ft1 and was in snow today almost up to my waist in snow.

Thanks Wes, so you thinking of planting sunflowers in august or September as a short term candy crop.

Very interesting! Thanks for sharing
Question: what’s a good rate per acre to broadcast sunflowers on top of a cut beanfield as a candy foodplot? Perhaps mixed with some oats and rye?

Sunflowers are the one plant that fails to make it to maturity in my spring/summer plots. Deer will eat them immediately as they emerge and start to grow.

Crazy weather year for sure. Sure hope we don’t have it again anytime soon.

Conditions were very similar to where I’m at in SE Ohio. Was a tough year for sure. Looking forward to 2025!

The best food plots are "Diversity, Wrapped in Security". So many people think you should plant this over here and that over there, never fully understanding how deer actually eat, or their need for security in any place where they will eat. They never eat just one thing, and your soil will never thrive with just one thing planted in it. Monocultures are a result of man's limited knowledge of soil biology and reflect the aesthetic desire for a food plot to look as "clean" as a farmer's field. That's a huge mistake and your own experiences prove this to you. When you have a good acorn crop, do deer stop using your plots, entirely? No, they eat a lot of acorns, but they also still come to your food plots. Plant more diversity in your food plots and they'll use them more frequently, over a much longer time horizon, than any monoculture you could ever plant. Also, if you think deer like acorns...get a grove of chestnuts growing on your property. They drop essentially every year and deer will focus on chestnuts even over acorns.

Let's see the pics and vids of the kills. Not just trail cam pics and vids. How many bucks harvested?

Terminated a cowpea plot in November 1 and planted oats, wheat and winter peas in the plot. Cowpeas seeded out and now have a crap load of cowpeas in December and the deer ain’t touching them, lol. Never again planting Cowpeas pretty much worthless here in Southern Texas. Still haven’t gotten a frost yet. 😂
