Well, before they changed the obstacle, you didn't have to slide down, you just jumped right in. My strategy (which was successful), I just jumped as close to the wooden median as possible and once I was under water, I stayed under and swam through until I was on the other side. It also helps when you don't hesitate. As soon as we were instructed to go, I hauled ass!
