How to answer 'Why did you choose this University'? | Ex-Visa Officer shares their insights

We often get asked how to answer certain questions at the F-1 visa interview. People are always wondering what the Visa Officer will think about the University they have chosen. Former Visa Officer shares his insights on this question.

I got admission from Colorado State University. Thanks Ben. I had many personal reasons but your video helped me to organize them and hopefully present them wll to VO. I like Colorado, Texas, south western states because of their culture, weather. Because they are less populous. I had a friend in the University and that was my first introduction to it. And I like the program on a personal level because it is about social change.

I went for an interview last month and was denied. Not because I didn't have funds. I had it and in excess via a scholarship. But the wicked VO never gave me a chance to explain anything as to how I got the scholarship. I'm sure he was so hell bent on denying me. I just wonder why a lot of VOs behave so irrationally. Now my plans have been thwarted, no near date for another interview, my start date is next month and every plan I have has been ruined all because of one jealous VO that sees everything bad in a foreigner getting a scholarship from the US.

Mr. Ben, I got admitted to two universities, and I chose Murray State University, which was one of the universities I got admitted to, my personal reason for choosing the university is that the university is located in a conducive environment, their fees are affordable, based on my own research about the school, they have a good ground on Information Technology because they have a good track record, so this is my personal reason for choosing the school. I will be grateful Mr. Ben if I get a reply from you.

Then tell me why this visa officer denied me immediately I told him I choose the school because the place has similar weather to my home country, he even looked at me with a strange face and said"you chose this place because of the weather" and immediately told me I don't qualify for the visa.

My best friend recommended the school to me. He graduated from the same school in 2021 and he is currently in Ghana, working with the Ghana Volta River Authority(GVRA) as a senior engineering consultant. He told me positive things about the school. I also did my personal research and got to know that they offer strong practical lab training in the field I want to study.

Hope that you are doing great! I have just been denied for the 2nd time this year for my F-1 visa renewal for continuing graduate studies (I have one more year to finish). Could you please answer the following question? Is there an issue if my sponsor is an American resident? My GPA is over 3.7, I had all the documents, I provided the correct information to the officer and my attitude was positive throughout the interviews. Thank you for your consideration!
