Same issues as others, I have an S21+ and other phones checked, not like this at all. There's no background option in settings, on any of our 4 phones

I think what ultimately happened was, when Samsung did one of the latest software updates for S21, it affected the sms software settings. I noticed a couple of months ago that message icon changed. In trying to accomplish changing my chat settings, I checked my sms settings and it was not set to the default Samsung settings. I couldn't change to the default. So I guess I'm screwed! I want my S8 back!!

If you want this option and you have a Samsung brand phone.... You have to change your default SMS app to Samsung Messages. Most of you probably have Google Messages.

Actually the 3 dots are now removed. Instead it the 3 lines up top on the left that says conversations. That pulls up your account. Scroll down to customize and tap on backgrounds. That's it. Just did mine

So I think I figured it out, I had the option to use a different text app as default (the one from my s21 fe 5g) which let me change it. I'm now using the fold 4

If your phone does not have a background option then it's not allowing you to the latest phones don't have the option which is absolutely garbage
