"there's no science happening here"
It's actually in fact science and amazingly fascinating
danelykins
hits hammer on his real hand:
"Did you feel that at all?'
"Nah"

This is an actual phenomenon and there are scientific papers written on it. That being said, as someone who both performed this test and had it performed on me, it doesn't work on everyone, and the strength of the illusion varies from person to person. And I remember the illusion immediately breaking as soon as I moved any part of my hidden hand.
It's hard for me to believe the illusion held strong even when the woman's finger was lifted under the flame. The hand positioning being as similar as possible to the fake hand is an important part of this test.

Honestly, they could do this for kids who don’t want to get shots at the doctors office! 😂😂

There's something about this video that helps me fall asleep at night it's very stimulating

Also hopes he shows them the tape afterwards so that guy knows he got a needle an inch deep in his real hand and didn't feel anything but he felt it in a fake one
thedoomslayer
it's all fun and games until you forget which one is which an you hit the real hand
oma
This is amazing because it shows a small precent of what the brain is actually capable of
thedoomslayer
I like it, but there is actual science, why lie about that? Reality makes it even more wondrous.

I liked how he just pulled out the hammer without warning him, 3:44

Seinfeldian effect and the Costanza effect. I'm dead.

It's true about feeling in an arm that isn't real. Or even there.... I had a brother in law who sadly had to have arm removed due to cancer in the shoulder, but he swore it itched or was painful even when it was no longer there. Very He sadly later died. RIP Geoff

This would be a crazy good torture, you would feel the paint without the consequences so it could be infinite torture

Look up the body transfer illusion by the modern rogue. They did that 2 years ago

Well done my man

I honestly don't believe you'd poke a needle one inch into somebody's hand like that, you could hit a nerve and damage it.

The power of BS might be a play somewhat but this is science as well. It's a neuropsychological phenomenon that contributes to phantom limb syndrome. The human brain does not like discontinuity and is constantly trying to fill in the blanks as a protective measure. So we see faces in things that don't have them, jerk away from a hot stove before we actually register the burn, and fill in the gap for sensations. (There's more to it than that but you get the gist)
