1) So browser stores the cookie, just like localStorage? If yes, whats the difference between cookie and localStorage anyway?

No thats not how the website knows that you are logged in, thats how the website knows you are interested of a certin product and that you agree with the policy.. and stuff like that.. Do not store sencitive user info in cookies
