In my opinion, if you're a gamer:
Motherboard: if the motherboard's BIOS can be upgraded to support the intel gen 13th CPUs, then there is no need to buy the newest motherboards.
Storage: It doesn't matter at all if you have the Gen4 or Gen5 NVME for gaming. The loading times are all same, since the games and game engines themselves are not optimized to use the power of even a Gen4 storage.
RAM: DDR5 RAMs give you at most 5-15 more FPS comparing to DDR4.
CPU: If you are planning to have a 4080 GPU or lower, then an intel i3 gen13 is more than enough.
USB: In the beginning We all think that we need more and more USB, but in the end, the only thing we do the most is, watching YouTube. Why on earth you have to have 6 or more USB 3 Gen 2x2 !!!
PCIE: It's enough to have 1 PCIE 5 for future GPUs. There is no need to have 2 or more PCIE 5 really.
GPU: This is the only thing you must invest in it.

I went with the z790 version just because of the support for higher speed DDR5. I'm going to be keeping this setup for a while and can see myself purchasing faster DDR5 when it becomes cheaper in the future. Other than that, I completely agree these boards are almost identical.

I've been staring at that MSI MPG Z790 for over a month! You just saved me $100 on this very close to budget build! Thank you!

Another thing to consider is if you have/are getting a 13th gen chip the z790 boards are compatible out of the box whereas the z690 boards need to have their bios flashed to support it. Now, if you get a board without a bios flashback button you will need a 12th gen chip to go through all of that just to use your 13th gen chip (if my memory serves me correct)

I was deciding which motherboard to buy for my Core i9 13900K, or the MSI Z790 ACE or the MSI Z790 CARBON WIFI. And this video just gave me the answer I needed... I'm going for the MSI Z790 Carbon... because sometimes we don't need to spend so much money on something that in the end we can do the same with other options. Thank you

Dude, this video just saved my bacon. Just spent the last 3 hours obsessing over these two exact boards. Went with the 690 because the 790 was back-ordered. Feel much better about my purchase now. I actually feel lucky the 790 was back-ordered because it saved me well over $100

Good video on the differences of the two MB's, in May of 2023 the price difference at Amazon is only $20 so I went witht he Z790

When it comes to PC's I always go for the latest tech I can afford. I just can't see myself spending around $3k and not being able to use ddr5 ram. I've debated just going with a 690 platform but for that few hundred dollars difference I know I will be kicking myself in the butt down the road. My last platform I built was a maximus hero vii i7 4790k 16gb 2400mhz ddr3 rtx 2060. I've only upgraded GPU 2 times in 8 years and it's been a solid machine. Time for a while new build. Really want z790 i9 13900k 32gb ddr5 rtx 4080. I feel that should hold me off for another 7-8 years ☺️ just a GPU upgrade eventually and possibly another 32gb ram. Anyhow, enjoyed the video, I'm always consuming information and opinions.

I have the Z690 Carbon Wifi and love it. No need to pay the extra hundred, just not worth it.

i’m getting an i7-14700k cpu and have been indecisive with either z690 or 790.. i’m thinking ahead so pretty much future proofing my build. do you think a z790 is worth it or should i save up with a 690?

Here in Denmark the price gaps aren´t there except for one brand which I know nothing about, NZXT mobos. The GIGABYTE Z790 UD AX is currently actually cheaper than most Z690 boards, there is no reason to actually go for a Z690 board here unless you wish to experiment with a new brand.

I was comparing the Aorus Elite AX DDR4, Z690 vs. Z790. It's shocking how the Z790 board had its corners cut: worse VRMs (Direct 16 70A vs. Parallel 8+8 60A), worse audio (ALC1220 vs. ALC897), and less SATA ports (6 vs. 4). This is because Intel charges more for the Z790 chipset and Gigabyte had to downgrade elsewhere. What the Z790 board has that the Z690 doesn't is that its 4th M.2 slot supports PCI-E Gen4 instead of Gen3. That's it. Maybe look at the Gigabyte boards next time because of the greater difference.

I just got a Z690, glad to know I got it for the right purpose of pushing DDR4 to its upper limits. Just to confirm tho because im still new to PC building.... 4000MT with 15CL is good right? I know the later numbers go higher but the first one is 15CL.

I was going to build a new PC in February but now you've put a stop to it. What's the point if like you say 14th gen intel is a different socket I might as well just wait if it's the same year this year 2023. Thanks you just saved me £2, 000/2, 500 as I planned on building a computer to last a few years but be upgradable which I guess it wouldn't of been I'd of been stuck. Gobsmacked.

I am currently looking at getting a 14900K I have an Asus Formula Z690 a freaking 1000 dollar mobo when I got it new. If I can use it again for a 14900K that would be amazing. Going to have to look into this.
