I've been working night shifts for nearly ten years. Very hard to balance family life, stay healthy and keep upbeat. Bonus about night shifts is that you get the World to yourself, empty roads, no lines in supermarkets, and the good feeling of driving home when everyone is going to work! Great tips btw👮🏻🇬🇧

I am a nurse and have been working the night shift for 15 years. Here is what I do: I stay up until 1 or 2pm and sleep until 9pm. When I get up I have my dinner and I have to be at work by 11pm. I have 1 piece of fruit during the night and drink tons of water when I get home I have breakfast. I go for walks and during the winter I do my Leslie Sansone walking tapes. This has worked for me.

I have work night for a while now.. And thing I have noticed it helps me is after work go for a run you can get some more sleep. And on shift don't drink a lot caffeine, eat more fruits and vegetables but don't eat too much because then you feel tired.. These are some tips that helped me during night shifts ..

I've worked permanent night shifts for over 6 years now and have a reputation for never being sick and always having bags of energy at work. My biggest tip is to avoid blue light before bed. You can buy glasses that filter blue light and I wear these as soon as I get home. Blue light (which btw, mobile phone screens give off) blocks melatonin production making it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. Of course you need a good eye mask too. The neoprene ones that are moulded around the nose are great as they let nothing through (although I am a small head so have to stuff the gaps with cotton wool!). I also have a light box that I sit by when I wake up, which tricks my body into thinking it's day time. If you hack your biology in this way, you can avoid a lot of the health issues associated with night shift as it's no different to being in a different time zone as far as your body knows.

Totally right about not stressing over getting sleep, it only puts you under more pressure.

This is the best video i could find on how to survive night shifts. The best tip was not to consume statistics on how bad night shifts are for your health. Being positive and not worrying about what may happen to you is the key. There are a lot of people in world working in night shifts. Just love your work, do whatever you can to keep yourself healthy and happy. 😊

I've been working nightshift for over 2.5 years now in pharmacy. I love it! I work 7 nights straight 12 hour shifts and then I'm off for 7 days. It seems as though my body has adjusted well, but I am interested in light therapy at the beginning of my shift bc I tend to turn to sugar some nights when I feel that lull (I"m extremely sensitive to caffeine and won't sleep if I have any). I stretch at work, too. Being on your feet all night really takes a toll on your body. Yoga, meditation, and stretching does wonders for me so I'm glad you included it in this video. Thanks for all of your great tips!

Thank you so much for this video. I used to work day shifts and I'm such a morning and sunshine person that it's been so difficult to transition into night shifts in my new job. But reminding us to take on a positive attitude and just relax is probably the best advice. You are changing the world for nurses by making these videos and I'm certain you've improved the lives of your patients! Thank you.

Thank you Caroline! I work nights in an ICU. It's definitely physically and mentally taxing, so I appreciate your tips. I try to stay positive but I really miss having a more normal life, with a normal schedule and feeling fully rested. I take melatonin 10mg most days when I have to sleep and it works great for me, it helps me sleep through the day and I don't wake up groggy. Anyway, love your channel and keep up the great videos! xx Olivia

Hey Caroline, thanks for such an awesome and informative video! I love the fact that you used your Nightshift work to help with making your book, I'm kind of doing the same with my own broadcasting career and as crummy as Nightshift may seem it is a great place for headspace. Also a big shout out to yourself and all of the other nurses and doctors, and cleaners and everyone in between who all work Nightshift and keep the wheels on our countries turning.

Best,
Kris

I just want you to know that I did everything exactly what she said and the difference is amazing! I never drag my feet at work, and I don’t drink so much coffee

I’ve just stumbled onto your video because at 46 I’ve been working night shift in retail for almost 6 yrs and it’s starting to take its toll. I love it because no customers and you can get tons of things done without the hustle and bustle of dayshift hours. Also during the day I can get alot of errands done without putting pto for. But lately I haven’t been sleeping as much as I should and my caffeine fix is getting worse and I feel groggy a lot. But your advice of don’t worry if you can’t sleep it’ll come great after work, and also eat fruits and veggies instead of microwaveable junk and drink lots of water I hope will help. Thanx again.

At almost 59 yrs old, I've accepted my first ever RN night shift! I was hired as a night supervisor! I'm terrified of the transition, both working nights and to step into supervisor shoes while I am transitioning! I am trying to fill my mind with all these ways to not only successfully accomplish this huge change but to excel at it. Your hints helped me to contemplate some hints that I'd not even though of, such as stay positive EVERY day, AND advice on how to maintain that positive attitude. Thank you for sharing. I plan to use the night shift to get my MSN... nurses that do not further their education in today's world are going to lose out on getting the positions they want even if they are well liked and qualified. Believe me, I've just lived that and it was really discouraging. I was so busy trying to stay busy with the registries that I felt like I couldn't go to school, and felt stuck. I am grateful for this job which gets me out of registry work, and I will make it work. But well, it is making me feel anxious.

Thank you so much! I did fulltime night shifts for 3 years (9pm-5am, Mon-Fri) and now work a job where I have rotating shifts (5 weeks of dayshifts, 2 weeks of nights) and I've found it SO hard to find resources, tips and ideas for shift workers. So often all you find is "DID YOU KNOW NIGHT SHIFTS CAN KILL YOU" lol. That's nice... SOMEONE has to work those nights! Help them out instead of scaring them. You definitely helped and reassured me a lot! Those 3 years of fulltime nights had a huge impact on my health, and now I'm trying to minimize the impact of the rotating shifts. As a migrant my shift work has helped me start a career in a foreign country in an industry that I would have otherwise never broken into!

I love your comment about not over-consuming information about how bad nightshift is for the body. I think most people just do it for a short/specific amount of time. You will bounce back! Reading more information will just make you more anxious and contribute to your sleeplessness. If you take good care of your diet, exercise, and mental health, night shift should be doable (albeit hard!)

Thank you so much Caroline for this video. You gave me so much positivity. And I'm just blown away from the fact that you wrote a book in your spare time. That's really inspiring. And again, thank you ❤
