Over the Top from the Inside (OTTFTI): How Modern Players Use an Outward Hand Path and Shallow Shaft

If you like watching great golf swings there are a bunch of them here! I assembled these to demonstrate OTTFTI, my preferred transition method that uses an outward hand path and shallowing shaft. By no means does every Tour player employ it, but quite a few do, and their swings appeal to me more than ones those where the hands either drop straight down or fall backward. I use the analogy of sidearm throwing (as Hogan did in The Five Lessons) and OTTFTI is just another way to describe what is happening when a golf swing utilizes right upper arm adduction, right forearm supination, and right shoulder external rotation as the hands and arms respond to the change of direction of the pivot.

Well done Wayne. This is enlightened teaching. I believe many amateurs should take the club way inside (contrary to popular belief) so that they can actually swing 'over on-plane'. Just like Bobby Jones and Byron Nelson...

Wayne. If you look at swings from the 30s, 40s and 50s, most good players took the club back way inside which made them appear OTT coming down. Why do you think most of them took it back inside? It was too common for them all to stumble upon this by coincidence. Snead is my favourite BTW. Thanks.

I read Mike Benders book a few years ago. He teaches moving the handle straight towards the ball from the top while allowing the shaft to shallow. The hand path he likes to see is steeper on the downswing than it was on the backswing. His reasoning is that the handle takes the shortest route towards the ball maximizing clubhead speed. As you point out in this video a lot of very good players seem to move their hands like that.. I guess they can create any shot they want providing they have the clubhead traveling down on an appropriate path. Their bodies move well also.

WAY MORE BI PRODUCT OF PLAYERS KNOWING THEY NEED TO SHALLOW SHAFT, THEN A CONSCIOUS EFFORT TO HAVE OUTWARD HANDPATH

Great video work. I think the main reason for shaft flattening out is body rotation and hip flexion at p6. Just compare to 99% golfers that have opposite (zero rotation) humping the goat hip extension (reverse hip flexion) at same p6 position with massive outside-in with vertical shaft instead.

This is a great video, Wayne D. Maybe your best! Thanks. 👍🏻

So, this outward movement is a product of body and shoulder rotation, not force of the hands and arms outward, correct?

Great stuff again Wayne D, been watching for years but never left a comment. I've learnt so much from all your video's and in my opinion every teaching Pro in the world should watch your video's and learn. You explain it all so well and I'm still working on Hogan moves at 59. Many thanks, Paul Way ex Ryder Cup player 1983-1985.

They are actuality trying to swing in a perfect circle with the bottom of the ark the outer part of the circle. Its actually an in to in swing.Tigger did not swing this way when he was at the peak of his game. Most all the great players came from the inside. This way of swinging creats a straight ball flight not much curve or a slight cut.In my opinion Why would it matter.the ball is already gone .Even Lee Trovina took it out side on the back swing but always came from the inside coming down.He sit up left of target with the face at the target and hit a very controlled cut.He started drawing the ball on the champions tour and started sitting up more square to the target.

Interesting how the guys at AMG are convinced the pros are moving their hands straight down, while others like Wayne have video of them moving the hands out towards the ball.
May just be semantics but I do like Wayne’s analysis

Isn't this called Reverse Slot coined from Jim Mclean book The slot book?

This is an old time move by many in the hall of fame. And it works well for the everyday hacker. Try it.

Wayne. Do you think this is a more natural way to swing the golf club?

Yeah, but my Under the Bottom from the Outside has got that beat.

Hey Wayne, thanks for the video - I first really noticed this with Cameron Champ - though in retrospect it’s not new - as i think you’d agree - it’s actually a Hogan move. Interestingly I think it links to what Jordan rehearses before each swing. The ‘helicopter effect’ of the clubhead moving out and away from the head at the beginning of downswing (counter clockwise if looking from above the player.) The Brooks move really shows it. No doubt it leads to good ball striking - flattened shaft, hands in front, exit left etc. However, and this is where I’m interested in your view… I think it can get in the way of the short game - where the better move is actually to stay really neutral plane or even slightly steepen the shaft and drop hands down to increase angle of attack - like Phil - I’m wondering if you agree?

Hey Wayne been watching your videos for years and was once a premium member, you think K.H Lee has the OTTFT?

Nice video, Coach! Enjoyed it. My fav OTTFTI is Alex Noren.

I don't understand why you think all of those swings are the same on the way down. Cameron has a completely different move on the way down. I also don't understand why having your hands too deep on the backswing which then forces you to compensate by doing this OTTFTI is better than a swing without compensations by staying on plane. I think this is a product of the masses copying Tiger and everything he did and when Foley screwed him up, the world tried to copy it.

I think I do this naturally all ready. Are these guys hitting slightly out to in as well?
I saw everyone exiting low and left which I don't do but then saw Marc Leisham's follow through which is a bit higher
