Sinus Headaches: Causes & Treatment

Perhaps one of the most common reason for a patient visit to an ENT office is for a chronic sinus headache. The most common complaints include nasal congestion, chronic pain or pressure over the face or eyes, no fever, and no purulent drainage. The headaches typically are between the eyes, forehead, cheeks, or all these regions. Other symptoms that may or may not be present, include light and/or noise sensitivity, pain worsening with movement, nausea and/or vomiting, runny nose, and watery eyes. These headaches last ~4-72 hours, with or without antibiotics, and occurs regularly, up to several times a month.

However, the reality is that ~80% of such patients are actually suffering from migraines or some other type of neurologic condition.

To my fellas out there with this problem. The main enemy for this is mucus. I only experience this problem for a period of time during winter or season changes. You gotta change diet/stress/lifestyle and use nasal sprays or allergies pills to avoid them, or take them out from a 10/10 to a 4-3/10. Keep in mind that stress is also a huge factor on how much it’s going to hurt!

Anyone else get pains in these areas when it's cold? Everytime I walk into a grocery store and I'm near the freezers or any cold area my eyes and the rest of my face start to hurt until I put something warm over it.

I've had this pain my whole life(I'm 17) and I've been to so many doctors and allergy testings and x-rays and antibiotics and I've used so many different sprays I'm just hopeless at this point.... this pain gets worse if my neck hurts and idk

I had a lot of pressure and tiredness feeling in these areas, mostly around eyes and nose etc... The only thing that helped me was the spa (steam room + cold water ), twice a week. I stopped going spa because busy, and the feeling came back 😭.

*Mine are food allergies. My body rebels when I eat corn tortillas. Within 4-6 hours I feel it.*

1-2 Benadryls paired with 1 excedrin helps me. Yesterday, I tried using the sinus inhaler with a Vicks vapor tablet on and off throughout the day, drinking hot tea, saline nasal spray (in a neti pot kinda way.. but it never passes to my other nostril), and drinking lots of water, and the help of a sinus heating pad (like a heated eye mask with the eye area open)… it helped for general sinus pain but today… with my only symptom being a sinus migraine… none of that worked 😓 I ended up vomiting twice (and trying to prevent vomiting again) and HAD to take pills. I was only trying non medicated techniques to see if it worked because I want to get pregnant some day … but I can’t imagine going a day without taking meds for this gosh darn sinus migraine 😓

My ent recommended a surgery to reduce my turbinates over a year ago but I didn’t go through with it because he couldn’t give me a yes or no about the surgery helping with my migraines… I don’t care about the stuffy nose… I just want this pain to go away! Without medication. Honestly.. it’s to the point where I think maybe surgery is my only hope now.

I take Phenylephrine HCI 10mg and most of the time it works very well. I also take ibuprofen with it. However sometimes it just doesn’t work and I get fever and nausea and I just wait for it to go away.
