Today we're talking about oaking and adding various other flavors to a mead. This is a really tricky topic because there are so many ways to do this. You can choose to oak your meads with different kinds of woods and methods. These methods range from things like, oak chips, oak cubes, oak spirals and more. We will also discuss some mead successes and failures as well as some things I'm excited about! If you want to see the full video version of the podcast go check it out on Patreon. Mead Making is an art that people have enjoyed doing for years. It's something that intermediate to expert people can do and I'm somewhere in between. I've really enjoyed trying to use lots of different flavors in my meads like: Apple, Peach, Mango, Pear, Traditional, Elderberry, Blueberry, Blackberry, Maple Syrup, Apple Pie, Pie, Pumpkin Pie, Cherry, Chocolate, Bochets, Bochet, White Chocolate, Cilantro, Peaches, Melomels, Melomel, Acerglyn, Hydromel, Berries, Berry, Capsicumel, Peppers, Fenugreek. Some of my favorite meads have been the big blueberry mead, apple cinnamon mead, Bochet, OK Bochet, Raspberry Bochet, Mixed Berry Mead, Orange Cream mead, and Peppermint mead. I focus on how to make mead and how to make mead for beginners and hopefully anyone who wants to continue to grow in their mead making.

I’ve only done a traditional mead with vanilla and a oak spiral. It definitely went very well. I’m planning on doing a cherry/oak one next time as a small brew and see how that works out. As far as barrels I always was under the impression that temperature flux was important to have the wood absorb and expel the liquid to infuse the flavors.

Most distilleries here in Texas use 5 gallon barrels. I'm planning on getting some, but filtration is a problem I'm facing. There is tons of sediment, especially with charred barrels.

I have a maple/blueberry almost done in primary. Wondering if a maple or birch chip would compliment. It's only a 1 gallon batch so I have a dilemma....
