reading your description, I just have to make a comment and totally agree with your assumption! as I just couldn't find any other reason how the song lyrics were totally matching the timeline of every Jo and Laurie's scenes and told from Jo's perspective. sure that the song can also fit other on-screen 'mis-opportunity' romances but never in the way it matches Jo and Laurie story timeline literally 100%.
I have made similar comment on other posts regarding this theory of Taylor actually wrote this song after watching Little Women and heartbroken by the Jo and Laurie storyline like most of us. but never seen anyone who actually dares to let that theory out in the post description until now.
