I was in Madras, now called Chennai, back in January of 1985 with two Canadian hippies. And it was not what I was ready for. But I learned to value the culture a little and realize it wasn't mine to belong to or own. Still I was privileged to be part of something, sure I could not understand. Still seeing an immense statue of a Reclining Krishna in a remote inner room of a large temple structure, or climb the towers of Madurai, or stand at the point of Kanyakumari and see before me the Indian Ocean and the Arabian Sea stretch out into infinity. The trip was tiring and in the end I capitulated to a feeling of hopelessness because I was such an outsider.

The last day, being helped out of the country, seeing Red Fort and standing in a busy street corner with a sea of Indian faces going to and throw, being the only Caucasian in the Human Sea of India. Being alone is perhaps the best gift. It taught me how little I am, and that we all are. But still we cling to this life like it matters.

Thanks to the family of (Kunjitapadan) Kunjimama, as he was referred to. And thanks to the Sri Yananada Seva Samajam, then the home of S. Haridos Giri. I still remember him carrying a large vase of water, and in a large hall of Indian followers, he walked amongst them, shouting his sermon, and taking a palm leaf and dipping the frond in the vase of water and splashing it to and through onto the people in his presence. I did not understand the Tamil words, but it was an act of ablution, of blessing, of bestowing the value of life in the moment to us all. 34 years later, I am still wandering and watching this movie from time to time. Maybe someday I will go back, but then the reasons have changed and may not be valid anymore.

He invited me to attend a future trip instead to Kashmir. Ohm Kashmiri he would say. But I felt lost and unworthy by then. Little did I know then, that on one such trip North, would be his last in this life.

Another memory of a moment there, he said that where you are, if when you bathe or immerse yourself in water, just say Ganga three times. It's an invocation of the spiritual act of bathing in the Ganga any where you go. It elevated the ordinary and makes even a simple moment, better. So sometimes, even just standing by the edge of the Atlantic, or paddling out to catch a wave or just sit in the water. I remember, it's the being immersed in the water that counts. Next time you are there too, just remember to elevate the moment.

Another moment, on the temple tour of Tamil Nadu, I entered a cab to find an elderly lady on the tour being comforted by a younger woman. I looked at her for just a moment, and I knew she was unwell. I backed out quietly from the cab. Later I was told that it was her wish to live long enough to see this temple. I can't remember her name or the temple we stopped at. But again I was privileged to witness her last moment in life. I have come into other peoples lives again and again at moments like this, someone near them passes away. It's as if I am being reminded to cherish this moment and not that I bring bad things to others as I once believed.

Sriman Stern, can we also take responsibility for our money those which we have earned in nonviolent way not being spent on belligerence and war industry? Can we create a critical mass to help shift our hostile paradigm into a harmonious one? Thank you 🙏

So the mahatma's stay only in the ashram, never going out into the world beyond. Spending the rest of their days in ….

But then the Guru says one day, "Hey, you Ravi, run off down the road to that new Thai place. I don't know about you but I am getting kind of tired of rice and curry. I need something with a little Lemon Grass and Coconut milk. And Ravi, leave a decent tip. I don't want those Buddhists complaining about the cheap Hindu's, again!'
And Ravi replies, "Yes, Babu, but the Thai place is on Door Dash and Uber Eats. Can't we just order online?"
Guru sighs, "Ravi, you have to step outside yourself to see what lies beyond. Think of this as part of your Sanatana Dharma. How else can you know anything unless you test what you have learned in the broader world? So, hurry up. I am getting hungry here!".
