The scariest NPC is _a nobody_ with a shovel. Nobody knows if he's a farmer, a construction worker, a cemetery plot digger, maybe all of those things, perhaps none. All we know for sure is that nobody has dug a hole for anything except for him. He's the man that moves dirt, and who knows what else? Gods know.

Pretty much what happened to me. After getting to the "big city" my players decided to start living there, and the campaign has basically become a persona game with occasional adventures thrown in

And so an epic quest of revenge and adventure starts.

"My name is SomeName NPCman and you killed my apprentice. Prepare to die!"

Party: “Who are you, villains!”
Masked villain 1: Just a man who sold you bread once
Masked villain 2: And just a blacksmith with no apprentice

This kinda happened to my party and the DM hated it because we kinda just relaxed at town and were doing random things that were not the main campaign to the point that the DM openly killed us off with assassins just to start a new campaign… I know it was partly our fault but that was not the ideal way to handle it

I came up with a campaign idea last night that I really want to try out doing. The group of low level adventurers try protecting their home from the BBEG. BBEG banishes them, instead it threw them across the world to an unknown location. Group finds themselves as Displacement Beasts but with their class powers/abilities and some balancing changes. Now they have to find their way home, help and get help from other animals and beasts and try not to get caught by "animal control" or hunted by adventurers.

Yes it's based on Homeward Bound.

In 2ed towards the end, there was a DM book put out where it made common NPC classes playable. It was meant to flesh out important NPCs a bit but my players asked if they could actually use it to make some of the characters for our new campaign, It worked out kind fun.
