Tantalum caps go boom... They're also made from minerals with dubious supply chains, so some folks will go to lengths to avoid designing with them.

I used to test circuit boards at NCR when they came off of the assembly line and learned to check first for any capacitors or ICs that were in backwards because they would sometimes explode when the board was powered up.

My current college project is using tantalum capacitors. I installed them backwards not realising they're polarised. Thanks for this video, you stopped me from blowing up my board

So just going to ignore film capacitors, which are just as common as the 3 mentioned, even often a replacement for tantalum caps as they are durable and more cost efficient than the expensive rare metal tantalum. They are also, like ceramic caps, generally non polarised.

Electrolytic does not do well with reversed polarity. The bigger the cap and the higher the voltage, the bigger the bang.

If you put a 10v electrolytic on a wall power cord it pops like a firecracker. Its fun to slip it between someone's feet and set it off as a prank lol
