Its an important part of the character. He wasn't refusing to complain because he didn't want to be a burden or because he wanted to prove he was tough. He wasn't even speaking to them when he said he was alright. He was speaking to himself. More than anyone, he was the one who needed to be convinced that he could do it. That he could go on. That was literally his entire task. Put one foot in front of the other and just keep moving. All of his focus was dedicated to that. "I am fine. I can do it. This will not stop me."

It's just like the reasoning for why Frodo needed to try to save Smeagal. Smeagal was driven mad by the ring. It corrupted him. And it was doing the exact same thing to Frodo. So Frodo needed to know that even smeagal could be saved. Because if there was hope left even for him, then there would *always* be hope for Frodo. And that gave him strength to keep on going.

Bilbo is the reason Frodo learned to just do it yourself. Bilbo also complained for legitimate reasons. The dwarves were unprepared for the journey in both the book and the movies. They were supposed to be wise travel hardened warriors. They were older and part of the ruling class and so should have been able to make allies along the way. But they get taken hostage and nearly eaten by Trolls within days of leaving the shire, Bilbo has to trick their way out. Get captured by goblins and lose their supplies, but Bilbo was the one to notice the false floor and call out right before but didn't know what he was looking at. They get lost in the woods and almost eaten by spiders, but Bilbo saves them. Get taken hostage by the elves, but Bilbo breaks them out and gets them to Lake Town. Bilbo keeps at it when everyone else gives up on the door. It's Bilbo who notices the sickness in all the dwarves, gets the Stone, and tries to stop the battle. He just didn't realize how bad that sickness was and that it took away all reason. If Bilbo wasn't there, the dwarves would have died before even reaching Rivendell.

Frodo had a million siblings and was kind of lost in the crowd before he was adopted by Bilbo, he was used to getting people to like him. Bilbo was a spoiled rich heir, not a bad guy but also willing to say every inconvenience that wronged him by existing.

Attended a full extended triology viewing at the local cinema last month (11 hours of delight), and the main thing that struck me was: movie Frodo has little to no self preservation skills. Sure the ring may be enticing him, but come on! Walking head on towarda the gates of Minas Ungol while Sam AND Gollum/Smeagol is shouting at him.

This goes all the way back to the origin of the story. Sam is a represents a batman or soldier-servant who attended an officer in the first world war. Frodo represents the officer, virtually certain to be drawn from the upper classes and well, a gentleman doesn't complain.
