My Big Fat Greek Wedding. But Vegan.

It's another film essay x recipe video honeybunches !! it's actually the third one I've made, but the second one i'm posting because the next one you'll see is a little similar to the film Julie and Julia.

This is one of my favourite films ever and putting this together was mighty satisfying and enjoyable :). The result is a little wonky in parts but hopefully all can be forgiven, and you'll enjoy the tunes if nothing else!

I so hope this provides a nostalgic hit of fabulousness for some of you honeybunches, and it brings a smile to ya dial. Okidokee - see you in the comments !

Those potatoes are calling my name. Definitely going to watch that film now (finally!). This series you’ve started has really got me thinking about the role of food in cinema.

TRANSCRIPT (for the Film Essay):
My Big Fat Greek Wedding.

What a serious classic.

This film fits into all the conventions of classic Hollywood storytelling, yet at the same time tells such a fresh yet relatable story, through non-stereotyped, genuinely loveable characters.
The viewer experiences an opening montage of the ‘the protagonist, Tula’s, backstory’, there’s a makeover scene, there’s the classic character arch of a girl reinventing herself and finding happiness, and of course there’s a forbidden love in there too, with classic, long-haired hunky spunk [IAN].

The story is about a Greek family, but the message and problems Tula faces with her family in the movie are so universal and adaptable – it doesn’t matter what ethnicity, background you have. It’s a relatable story in some ways for every single person who watches it.

While my nuclear, 3 cousin situation is more aligned with [IAN] family, if anything – this film reminds anyone with wacky family members, that it’s kind of what everyone has – so there’s no need to be so embarrassed about it. My Big Fat Greek Wedding touches of oodles of relative types…
- Such as cousins with two volumes, [loud and louder]
- Dad’s who complain that [no one tells him anything] and think that it’s a [“mistake to educate women”]
- Mother’s who [make you something] even when you’ve already eaten
- Brothers who exploit people’s levels of gullibility, making other’s look like fools

And Aunt’s who feel the need to touch people’s hair, and also have no clue what is means to [EAT NO MEAT] … but we’ll get back to that in a second.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding, reminds us all that we can’t choose our family, nor help being apart of it. But this start in life it inevitably gives us doesn’t have to [dictate who you are, but we should let it be apart of who we become].

This film makes me think how different my life and my personality could have been if I grew up in a mammoth family. How nice it would be to be able to your truest, rawest self amongst a number of people that large as a base before you start adding friends into the mix. In comparison I’m my truest stupidest self amongst a minute group of people I can count on one hand.

It makes me realize how nerdy, introverted and quiet my family are – like the Millers in a way, but like the movie suggests – that’s not a default bad or boring thing, it’s just another wacky variety of family.

Another reason this film is golden, is how it tells a “girl gets a guy” story, without being face palm insulting to the girl’s ability to make things happen for herself. She’s not swept off her feat by [IAN] Miller, she puts the buzz back in her life, which is what ultimately attracts [IAN] to her, rather than the typical damsel storyline of the reverse we see all too often. The film is all about the women in the family. Tula’s mother delivers that genius line of [the women is the neck and she can turn the head] the head of the household that is [anyway she wants]. And the film makes point of outlining how traditional gender norms are fine, but only if they are chosen for one’s self.

This film ticks so many boxes for me, and I’ve watched it when I’m sick countless times. It has forever made me unable to say the unusually large pool of family friends named Ian, without going [IAN] in my head, it given ‘Windex’ a lasting reputation (which may I add, speaks to how Tula’s dad’s obsession with the stuff is merely a motif for his actual faith in Americans and acts as a sign for how he inevitably come round to the idea of Ian Miller), the act of covering your couches with plastic will forever be linked to that film for me and one must not forget the Bundt cake, and ability to fix it’s holy problems with a pot plant.

There’s a lot of food in this film because as the film emphasizes, where there’s family there’s food. It’s homey, Greek, flavor packed, filo wrapped parcels of love and it’s a symbol of connection throughout the film. [IAN’s] vegetarianism, speaks about the compromises and adjustment the two families make - but it ultimately reminds us that even something’s as prudent in our lives as food, can never be trumped, nor will be more important than love and human to human connection.

Once again, I hope you enjoy the sampling of delicious food I veganized from this particular film honeybunches! I hope it makes you see that even plant-munchers don’t have to miss out on cuisine’s typically thought of as meat and dairy laden. Its flavor packed and set to warm your soul, so without further ado here’s ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding. But Vegan’.
