To clarify, Mauler could easily make it obvious who is the original but he purposely made the process seamless as they found out that the clone inevitably will try to kill the original. It's better for neither of them to know so they constantly try to one up themselves to prove who's the original making them a more effective team then a boss and underling dynamic.

To everyone saying why doenst he know wich bed he is in ect, the process also erases his memory a bit, so he doenst remember wich bed he layed down on. The whole point is that neither knows who is the Original, so that they will compete and therefore become smarter/stronger/better. Its why there are always 2, instead of an army. One Mauler is dangerous, if he dies its over. 2 will compete enough to grow, but still work together. Add more, and they will conspire againts eachother instead. Mauler thought this through.

He lays down WITH the self-awareness that he’s the original, so the clone is born with it too.

I like how Mauler is intelligent and insightful about the complexities of cloning and mind transfer, but is just too much of an asshole to operate when theres a clear power dynamic even if its with himself

After the latest episode it is pretty clear they need to each think they are the original. Otherwise one dominates the other and they are incapable of working together.
But you also have to admire the genius of Mauler. To be able to build his cloning machine and a neural copier in a wearhouse with off-the-shelf equipment is quite a feat.

This scene makes season 2 Mauler writing so much better. They really thought of everything before creating this character.

Remember guys (even though this has been stated by other comments), The Mauler is a supervillain with a superiority complex. He knows this. That's why he intentionally erases a bit of his memory and the memory of the clone so that they don't immediately turn on one another. We saw what happens when they actually have that knowledge, and it's not good.

Maybe the clone always has a mirrored perspective compared to the original. Which is why the clone is so certain he lay down on the "original bed"
