Contention around the issue of concussions is only growing, and we feel with the upcoming release of the movie "Concussion," it is only appropriate to address this issue with the most up to date information. For those who have suffered one or multiple concussions and life is never the same, the road going forward can be a difficult one. Fortunately, we are now in an era where these symptoms are validated and are not met with skepticism as they were even as recently as ten years ago. However, mainline therapies are lacking. In today's broadcast, we will discuss the current literature, our experience with this information, and how this new information will allow doctors to create novel therapies for the post-concussion syndrome sufferer.

After seeing dozens of doctors and being told that I am "fine", that there is nothing wrong with me, I am saddened at the medical world's reality of Traumatic Brain Injury. Some don't even know the term "post concussion syndrome". I was in PT for years because I couldn't get my balance back, my speech was changed, I was nauseous, I was dizzy, I couldn't sleep and yet I kept being told I did not have a brain injury. Leaky brain, I've got it.

To the Dr. who had a concussion- try knitting for the math skills. I have had 6 concussions, 4 of them from figure skating. 1 of them left me seeing 3 of everything & with another, I had fainting spells for 10 months afterwards. I have had "punch drunk" symptoms for years now when very tired or when the chronic pain is higher. Knitting helps a lot with all of the cognitive skills. With my last concussion, I was off work for a week. Around day 4, I picked up my knitting to try to do a few stitches. I just missed it & was bored. I was surprised when my blurry vision cleared up within the first line. In regards to your math skills, I was bad at math when in school, but have improved with knitting. Knitting can be used to teach everything from basic math skills to higher level mathmatical skills. There are a number of studies that have been done on it. Waldorf Schools teach knitting & crocheting before reading & writing at the ages of 4-6 to improve both courses. Some mathmatics college professors are using it now, too. I hope this is helpful. If you need references, please let me know. Best Regards...

Many thanks for this series. My last two concussions (6 total) from auto air bags have sent me into a tail spin. But, watching this gives me hope things could get better, and other avenues to pursue.

My husband slipped and fell at work and it his head, over 3 months ago. He has pcs and has all of the symptoms. He is getting PT and we see a neurologist soon. On workman's comp and they seem to be pushing him to go on light duty or get back to work. Yikes! My husband has changed so much, irritable, confusion, insomnia, mood swings. And no problem is shown on CT scan. I hope our neurologist is as knowledgeable as you two!! Thanks!

I live in Colorado and tree-hits during skiing happens often. At first they are cold and excited, and if there is no blood they shrug it off. Many don't realize they are different/injured right away. They may be sore and bruised but they don't understand the trauma they've endured, until their symptoms surface days later. A broken bone is apparent, a brain injury is invisible, even with tests. Symptoms are the cue to serious brain injury.

Thank you Dr. Rutherford, and Dr. Gates. I have experienced all of the effects and conditions stated here today. I have taken many supplements and they have all helped, but I am not back all the way. I have had many hits to the head over the years, then developed full blown depression with horrible physical, mental, motor, and memory effects. I now see it is due to the conclusion, sub concussion damage. I want to get your questioneir sheet, and see what you recommend.

My husband got his first bad concussion falling from one of those door-jam pull-up bars. He was feet up, head down when he fell. Second one, he was slammed across the side of the head……. He was athletic and productive and now he gets jarred by a dog pulling on the leash even, and he’s out of commission for four days. He gets TERRIBLE leg cramps you can literally watch CRAWL up and down his leg muscles as soon as he relaxes enough to start falling asleep. No sleep= no work and he’s see. A neurologist. Doctor said the MRI didn’t show anything. We are at an absolute loss. And we have little boys. Husband was declined disability. What do people do? Please

Yes associated with stiff neck and back shoulder pain on and off yes along with minor headache...memory loss and headache when trying to focus with brain for... well cant fake because people at work or family members and friends will hear and see it daily. Can't work full time. No! But yes part time but it's a struggle and very stressful because we constantly have to let the people know.
