The Vector W8, a car that had both the bold and ambitious spirit of the 1980s automotive world. In this exclusive shorts video, we tell the story behind America's first true supercar, that never really worked as intenteded...

staggering specifications and fighter jet-inspired design

The Vector W8, often hailed as the coolest supercar of the 80s, boasted components straight out of a fighter jet, making it a marvel of its time. With only 19 models ever produced, this rare gem carried a price tag of $600,000, elevating it to the status of a hypercar. Its founder, Gerry Weigert, ambitiously claimed it could leave the likes of the Lamborghini Countach and Ferrari F40 in the dust, with a jaw-dropping 650 horsepower and a top speed of 248 miles per hour.

However, the Vector W8's journey was riddled with controversies and setbacks. The most notable being the famous tennis player Andre Agassi's experience, which turned into a public relations nightmare. Despite its impressive specs, the car faced challenges in performance tests, struggling to live up to its claimed top speed and reliability.

In this deep dive, we explore the highs and lows of the Vector W8's history. From its inception in the late 1970s, the partnership and eventual fallout between Weigert and Lee Brown, to the ambitious claims and the harsh realities that followed. We examine the technical marvels, like its Corvette V8 engine with twin turbos, and the unfulfilled promises that left car enthusiasts and critics alike in a state of wonder and disbelief.

Discover why Doug Demuro called it "the craziest supercar ever made" and why, despite its shortcomings, the Vector W8 remains a fascinating chapter in the history of American supercars.

For one it genuinely wasn’t ready, also the top speed not being reached is a bit misleading as journalists were mostly scared to push the car any further and would run out of road before reaching the top speed

I remember my grandfather bought stock in the company. They sent this glossy brochure with all sorts of cool pictures and specs. I was 16 and thought it was the coolest thing ever. Probably not grandpas wisest investment.

Hands down the poster car of 1991. This car is the reason I love cars today. It was the cover car for my first issue of Road & Track Magazine. I probably read that a thousand times… I didn’t have Playboy, I had car-porn… this was so amazing at the time. Vector made other cars, too…. But this one is legendary… I wish it had been given a good chance.

650hp was indeed impressive, but with an old 3-speed automatic gearbox this beauty sadly had no chance against the italians

We lost Gerald Weigert recently at the age of 77! The Vector is a lesson learned that you don't get into the car building business with a small wallet!

Imagine pushing to buy a Car, of which you know it is not ready for release, since the inventor told you so, and then complaining about it. You scammed yourself.

I made the body and frame fabrication shop for vector in Wilmington Calif, before the involuntary bankruptcy and takeover by Lamborghini, Jerry ended up getting bodies and tooling back but they cut up everything with a sawzall before returning, was never able to recover before he passed
