REFX Nexus 4 VST Plugin is Disappointing and Here's Why!

Показать описание
REFX Nexus 4 is a rompler VST Plugin for both Windows & MacOSX. This "new update" bring little to nothing to the table besides a few UI tweaks. One of the main issues with Nexus 3 was lack of editable OSC. Which seems to be the way REFX wants it to be because of their extensive library of sounds. In other words, they want to be the only people to sell you sounds! However, I totally understand but their library lacks in comparison to modern romplers like Kontakt, Omnisphere, & even the $20 Xpand!2 plugin. I'll walk you thru the "new" features & preview some of the sounds. So you can be the judge. Leave a comment below!

Better Alternatives

Xpand!2

Kontakt (I recommend checking out the free Kontakt player expansion)

Omnisphere (thought I'd never recommend this lol)

or Warlock

Hive 2 (not exactly a rompler synth but it bangs!)

Let me know which rompler VST plugin are better than Nexus 4??

The fact that it came out so quickly after version 3 was a bad sign. Smells like a money grab.

Nexus 4 is a pass for me mostly due to the dated sounds that I can find elsewhere for a better price. I use Korg - M1 and Luxonix - Ravity on almost every track I produce just because I love that cheesy classic 90's sound.

I’m glad you do reviews like this because these companies hype the hell out of their products when in reality it’s comparable products that are just as good if not better

I feel it should have been a free update.
Maybe I would pay $50 to update, but not the $99 they are asking.
VPS Avenger is my favorite synth. The guitar expansions are amazing.

Always glad there are honest reviews like this one on YouTube. I was a bit disappointed they decided to go from 3 to 4 for just some plugin improvements, looks like a very bad marketing move. And I honestly love this plugin, have tons of expansions and am still using it after more than ten years now.

You're better off with a sample subscription service nowadays, like Splice or Loopcloud, as they come with build-in romplers nowadays that offer superior sounds. And not only are their libraries superior, but they also get constantly updated as well. And the same goes for their software.

I've got the same feeling with the Native Instruments stuff.
its sounds ok but its hard to find anything decent. The UI of most Kontakt plugins doesnt help it either...

I'm glad that I am not the only one who thinks Nexus 4 sounds very outdated. My friends love it, but they are stuck in a rut. No inspired sounds to convince me either. Great Review as always!

So glad you do these reviews. Nexus never sparked the “oooo gotta have it” section in my brain.

At the price point I could get my favorite sounds from Roland cloud. I have Komplete and with having MassiveX, Monarch, and other sounds I’m good. I have the AIR products as well. I’m good 👍🏾

Nexus is a ROMpler primarily aimed at EDM producers. There are some great sounds for those genres. It is designed for speed and convenience rather than sound design. There are also plenty of packs that provide sounds suitable for many genres including trap.

VPS Avenger is also from the same sound designer (Manuel Schleis) and IS a great tool for sound design with a lot of the same kinds of sounds (and plenty of raw material to make your own). It is a very deep synth/sample player with extreme flexibility. In fact, I believe Manuel uses it as a tool to make the Nexus sound packs.

Great honest review and kind of explains why I've been struggling with this VST since purchasing Nexus 3 and why I didn't bother shelling out upgrading to Nexus 4

This really comes down to the genre that you are making. For pop and elm nexus is a must have together with spire, serum and sylenth.

He did a very good job imo. Explaining the basics step by step. English is not my first language and I have no experience in using DAWs

It's just trendy to shit on Nexus yet people praise Omnisphere. Omnisphere is fine, but over 70% of the presets are unusable and dated as well.
Nexus is super light on CPU and you can run 10 instances and still be fine even on a cheap computer. It allows you to produce very quickly then you can go back and change sounds if you need to.
Nexus is a tool just like any other production tool. When you use it correctly, it works very well.
Also, many of the new expansion packs do sound great for the genre.

Honestly you just saved me a few hundred bucks so thank you. I wasn't impressed by this vst seeing it like this.

Just the multisamples of Korg Wave State sounds better than Nexus, without any effects or layers. But obviously it's a different beast

I appreciate the honest review Ave, Nexus was good 8 years back, but it is outdated... just grab an Acces Virus hardware synth, lol.

Remember giving my old laptop virtual aids in 2011 just to have Nexus I was younger and hella Poe back then. Ahh the memories 🤣
