You forgot to mention that having a parent or both parents, that are very impatient and critical, can also cause this.
Every time you try to do something you may be yelled at or hit. So, you learn that to take action, is scary, not safe. You learn to go and hide this avoiding punishment.
This is the model I developed.
I am making progress. My husband helped me learn to change my car battery. My husband was far away so he told me how over the phone. I also watched a YouTube video.
I didn’t think I could do it. I really was overwhelmed.
But I did it!
Having a calm, patient teacher that is not shamed when you fail, but helps you try again, until you succeed, makes trying safe.
You are smart enough! You can do it.
Not sure how many people also struggle with not being supported to try to fix problems because of their parents shame, depression ( leading to be extremely critical and impatient?
But if you did, know that you can rebuild this within yourself. It’s hard work “ re-parenting” yourself, but it’s worth it.
There is so much you can do and learn to do well. Everyone makes mistakes, especially when learning.
It doesn’t mean you are stupid, or incapable, just that you are learning something new. It’s okay.

When you are constantly rejected this behaviour can be absorbed and this is how dominant people have ruled over others. I don't think you can just put the reasons into 2 boxes, pessimists or optimists. If you are being rejected systematically and from many things in your life you are bound to carry over this thought. I bet those guys who didn't develop learned helplessness had multiple good things going on in their lives, good social and economic situation, better support and so on.

This is exactly what is happening to me right now and I had not realized it until I watched this video. My helplessness has carried over to all other life domains and no wonder I got into a rut for a week now. I had never even heard of this before. Everyone should learn and be aware of this. Thankyou!!!

Hi,
I got a branch during my btech 1st year that initially i didn't liked... Tried studying for its unit exams but couldn't get good grades that's when I stopped trying, for next 4 semisters i didn't even bother to study for exams, never even tried, backlogs piled up, cgpa went a steep downhill.
Now, when I tried a comeback thats where this learning helplessness kicked in, i thaught It was just over for me that I will never be the same close to topper never again ..
Currently I am pushing myself motivating myself and doing good, this video really opened my eye.
Been doing good these days.

Fear of discipline routine is learned helplessness.

This theory is really, really limited and your exclusive focus on old literature is flawed. Look at Maier's recent research on the theory

Why do you keep it so complicated. I'm not going for my Masters. I just want to learn what works. I've watched it twice. Now that's depressing. It's simple. Why all the confusion. What happed to mice not jumping over a board to avoid an electric shock?
Now in one simplistic answer or one sentence, what's the solution? Pretend there is millions of regular Jane's and Joes that want to overcome. Maybe no more than 8th grade education. Maybe head trama. And please stop asking for money. Do it to be nice and helpful. I donate my time to help people speak the English Language better.
