This tool is a magnetic field detector . It will detect magnetic fields on fuel injectors, spark plug coils, or starter solenoids . It will pickup the fields of any magnet . It is quite useful and inexpensive and works on A/C or D/C systems . 6/19/23

saved my life but i used the commercial electric tester not matco.. best way to test coils by far. 60 seconds to test all 6! 10/10!

I had a misfire on cylinder number 2 and 7 on my Dodge ram. Replacing both coils didn't fix the problem. Removed the spark plugs and the electrodes were completely worn away. So a cylinder misfire isn't always a bad coil. Start with the most inexpensive thing first! Luckily the auto parts store let me return the coils

This is awesome, I've been taking them out and using an ohm meter to check the leads... this is much quicker. Thanks!

Thank you for this vid. It worked for me and replaced coil and away we go. Used the Harbor Freight Ames brand light. Worked like a dream.

I bought about 20 of these for 1 dollar AUD! I gave some away but I find that this is the quickest way to test ignition coil! Btw its just an AC voltage tester .

That's great but u don't know forsure if it's the coil, could be wiring/connector or module. So u still need to swap some coils to c if it changes cylinders. I mean most common is the coil but I've seen it be the wiring twice. And I'm a HD diesel truck tech and only worked as an auto tech for a few years.

Those have been around for a long time…most electricians use them everyday.

I use to use the timing light on the spark plug wires to see if the current was consistently flashing or if it was missing every now and then.
That told me if my spark wires were bad.

You can also use this tool to test the magnetic field in the relay.

I, of course, have to have one of those testers that never even flickered on a just-installed NEW coil, let alone the old ones on my '03 Toyota Corolla. My tester is marked "VoltAlert 1AC-D, sensitivity 90-1000 VAC". It does work on my home's electrical outlets. What brand did Nuts and Bolts use?

Just take your pocket screwdriver with the magnet and hold it over the coil. You'll feel the "fish bite"
