David Dawson's portrayal of Alfred was one of the finest pieces of acting I've ever seen.

"He's for England, my England...."
To Uhtred, "The man I've never understood but without whom I would not die a king."

Even though Alfred was too tough on Uhltred, it brought tears in my eyes when Alfred died. This soundtrack amplified the emotions. When Uhltred said, "He was my king" gave me chills. Outstanding series with perfect blend of these soundtracks.

Honestly…one of the best bonds of friendship & trust, !tarnished by rivalry & misunderstanding I’ve seen portrayed

These 2; their dynamic stole the show

Rest In Peace king. Your dream of a united England has come true.
David Dawson was the best actor to portray Alfred. I loved every second he was on the screen.

Alfred is a good complex character because he is caught between his respect for Uhtred and his need to use every tool at his disposal to protect and build his kingdom. Heavy lies the crown…

Imagining two men like this…

What an incredible journey. Uhtred’s life is SO DAMN tragic. This show is CRIMINALLY underrated!

He would have otherwise killed Alfred, but it’s funny…

Alfred is the only man I could ever see Uhtred following though.

WHY is this show not as blown up as say Game of Thrones?! (Game of Thrones seasons 7-8 didn’t exist)

From the first episode I love Alfred. I’ve watched the show twice through and I still cry when he dies and I mean sob. There are very few things that have had me crying like I did in this show at multiple parts. The way they portrayed two very proud men was amazing! This show is incredible and so underrated ❤️

Alfred was sick yet standing
Ruthless yet compassionate
Ennemy of the danish yet a symbole of the union
Alfred was à great King, he was à great man
This makes me crying again ! Damn

I’ve found myself watching this every year for the last 2 years. It stands in a class of its own and possibly the greatest series of all time. Just started the books as a result

If you strip away the theatre of Alfred's dialogue, what you end up with is pure contrition. this is a man who truly believed that he was doing God's work. Every decision he made, every controversial decision, every spite and admission... Was for "God's England". After everything he did to/with/for/against Uhtred was for that goal. And in his final days, he doesn't regret working to the creation of that England, he regrets the revenge he took on a single person, someone who was technically the enemy of that which he wished to create. It gives his apology and pardon a gravitas that couldn't have been conveyed had we only seen him write the pardon and give it to him. We had to be there, we had to hear Alfred tell Uhtred step by step/word for word what he (and we) all knew to be true.

Good luck to any story writers who wish to try to create a better pairing than these two. They were each others perfect foils, and you can see it in future episodes that they just couldn't find another equal for Uhtred as a character.

This show, all though violent in it's truth of the past, shows the world now what it lacks, the ability to look at your enemy in the eye with honor and understanding between right and wrong. I've had so many nightmares from which I do not know how i could've imagined it. Almost like memories of a distant past. When I was first introduced to this show, I felt I complete connection, almost like watching history repeating itself all over again thru my eyes. The people behind the scenes and actors are amazing beyond my words can expell. This show is a masterpiece. It's sad that today's perception will have a hard time relating to it's glory.

A bittersweet death, Alfred was a pragmatic man, as king it was his duty to make decisions for good of country, which sometimes rubbed off as unnecessarily annoying, nonetheless as pragmatic as he was, he was every bit as human as the rest of us.

People compare the Last Kingdom series with the Viking series.. but the first has beautifully developed characters and more ''soul'', whereas the second.. And what a mesmerizing soundtrack..
