Stop calling quadcopters Drones!

Hello, I'm Sal! I think we have to determine precisely what drones are and aren't before things get too out of hand and one thing gets confused for another. I discuss *radio controlled* quadcopters (not autonomously controlled ones) and what it could mean for the future of the entire RC hobby if people continue to misunderstand the differences between the two. I also briefly touch on the fact that the ability for aerial footage can exist on any RC model, not just quadcopters. (In fact Google has aerial footage and ground footage of practically the entire country)

**NOTE** The quadcopters I discuss in this video are FULLY operated by direct radio control. None of these quadcopters perform in an "autonomous", self-flying fashion that relies on AI and GPS systems as drones are known to do. In the case of a malfunction, the direct radio control quadcopters will simply turn off and drop, where as quadcopters ran by autonomous systems, like the DJI phantom, can go haywire and fly away, or into objects.

The likely culprit:
Autonomously controlled, underpowered DJI Phantoms are earning the nickname "Drone" for all quadcopters and multirotors alike. These quadcopters and ones like it give a false sense of security to the *novices* of this hobby. This is why there are so many videos of white DJI-style drones crashing into stuff.

Please feel free to ask any questions about any of the quadcopters you see during this video in the meantime :)

The part of the video where I accelerate very quickly into the air was taken by a go pro session on my ImmersionRC Vortex (racing quad not for beginners)

It drives me crazy when people call my multi rotor a drone!

Well Drone actually means unmanned vehicle, so a DJI phantom is unmanned and remote controlled. Drones and RC Vehicles share the name for that reason, but you still have a point. people should stop hating these things, people always view the worst aspect, and say stuff like it could drop a nuke and kill you.

But quads don't.

drone are most likely army vehicles that armed with weapons and thus uses fuel and jet engine while quadcopter are R/C that equiped with camera and thus uses electric motor

From what I understand .55 pounds is the tipping point for needing to be registered.

Dude, they have high quality cameras and they are fuck cheap. That's why they are being regulated. Because they are easily-accessible technology that has privacy implication, and they are susceptible to abuse. I understand that you don't really care about privacy thing. But even if most people are too dumb to care about privacy, the law still try to protect them. Isn't that nice?
