Writing numbers in standard form sometimes means using decimal places. What are decimal numbers? Decimal numbers are a way to represent parts of a whole number. Some decimal numbers include a whole number and a part of a number, like 4.6. Others include only a part of a whole number, like 0.75. The part of a number represented by a decimal will always be a factor of ten. Look at the decimal place value chart.

The place values to the left of the decimal point are represented as powers of ten, starting with ones, then tens, hundreds, etc. moving from the decimal point to the left. Moving from the decimal point to the right are also place values representing powers of ten. These numbers, however, show a fractional part of a power of ten. Starting at the decimal point, the place values are tenths, hundredths, thousandths, ten-thousandths, etc.
