It is crazy the amount of people that don’t understand what he means when he says he doesn’t have an accent. He’s not saying he doesn’t have an accent at all, he just means when he speaks Japanese he doesn’t sound Australian. That’s it!

Linguistics student here, you can have multiple native or "first" languages! As long as it's learned by a young age (don't remember the exact age) it's categorized as a native language!

I was exposed to two different languages from the time I was born, and was sent to a daycare to learn a third language. From the ages of 2-6 I would form a sentence using those three languages due to my lack of vocabulary in all 3.

similar to my case, i grew up in an international school from kindergarten until i migrated to the uk so i spoke english on a regular basis whereas i used cantonese at home but i had an accent with both😂

I learned Japanese and English at the same time as well, but spoke Japanese predominantly at home so I ended up having a strong Japanese accent like my mom. My teachers thought I had a speech impediment so they put me through speech therapy classes for five years to remove it

Same for me. My brain was overloaded with 4 languages at the same time. While my parents arent mixed races, theyre mixed ethnicities. My grandparents are all from different countries. I had to learn russian, english, korean and mandarin at the same time. Even now, i constantly have a lagged in my head when I'm translating stuffs😂 now im still learning japanese since my husband is japanese and i want to converse with his family a lot more easily.

as an indian-emirati in the UAE, i had to learn Malayalam (Indian Language), Arabic and English all at the same time, it’s straight ↑ hell learning 3 languages at the same time

no english accent when i speak spanish and no spanish accent when i speak english. i learned them at the same time growing up from people speaking with a native accent.

My indian boss told me her daughter had to contend with four different languages spoken by the different members of her family plus the english of the rest of Australia.
For a while she just spoke one garbled ball of words that only her mother could understand until she started to naturally separate them.

I knew a family in Japan. The mom was a kiwi who'd moved there over 20 years ago now. Her kids' first language is Japanese but they picked up English quickly after trips to their mom's home. I met the oldest when he was in 1st grade and spoke no English. By the time he was in 6th grade (right before I left), he had a New Zealand accent in English and was native-level fluent.

You can have multiple first languages. First language is the first language you know from birth.If you've been raised in a bilingual home both could be considered a first language especially in his case. A second language is a language youve learnt when your older and less likely to use it as main language it as your household language.

It's called compound bilingualism and it's not as big a deal as they make it sound. A huge portion of the world's population grows up speaking 2 or more languages at the same time.

When my bilingual cousins were toddlers they would start a sentence in English and Finnish it in French and have no idea they’d switched 😂 it was so cute

I’m so glad he’s able to describe the reality for many heritage speakers (like myself) on YouTube. It definitely helps shed light on the perspective of language acquisition and extends itself in so many ways to L3 learning

Wish my parents did this, they basically neglected my mother tongue and only taught me English cause they thought I couldn't do both. Now I can understand my mothertongue but can't speak it at all

some people don't have the opportunity to learn two or more languages at the same time when they were kids. at that point, you're native in both. like many indonesian people, they must learn two languages at the same time. the local language and the indonesian language. so, now if someone ask me which one did i learn first as a kid i don't even know myself. because i use both local language and indonesian as far as i can remember. and some kids' first word is just mama or dada anyways and i believe those two exist in every languages 😂
