I love Paul McCartney, I consider him to be the most talented musician of the 20th century, but John Entwistle is a beast. You don't get the nickname "Thunderfingers" for nothing.

I feel Ray Manzarek deserves an honorable mention

Paul McCartney’s bass playing on “Something” is absolutely spellbinding.

Paul McCartney will always be the number ONE bass player for me, my earliest influence as a bass player.

Roger Waters used to thank David Gilmour for Waters' nominations on "best bassists" lists.

I can't believe the bassist for The Doors didn't make the list. :P

I think Noel Redding and JPJ deserve to be higher in the list. Love the McCartney and Jack Bruce appreciation though

On this list, I’d make it: (1) JPJ, (2) Entwhistle, (3) Jack Bruce, (4) Noel Redding, (5) McCartney. The rest of course are very good and are part of all time great bands but these guys (certainly the top 3) revolutionized rock bass playing.

John Paul Jones and John Entwistle should be the top two.

In the history of rock and roll in general, James Jameson is number 1.

This video opened my eyes. The 60s had a lot of great musicians no matter what the instrument.

Danko was such a unique rock bassist. His playing style was really an extension of his personality. There’s this warm, unpretentious, slightly wobbly charm to it, like he was feeling every note rather than just playing the changes. Great player!

Although they are remembered as a 70s group, The Allman Brothers formed in the late 60s. It's a personal preference, but I would have found space on this list for Berry Oakley. Don't know who I would bump to make room.

McCartney did far more memorable bass work than Entwistle. Entwistle was great at one style—most think of one song when thinking of him. McCartney was far more versatile. I have Entwistle as the second greatest bassist after McCartney in Rock and Pop. James Jamerson and Carol Kaye are great too

Paul should be first on every bass rank

It's rare and delightful to rank Roger Waters.
I think it's still a masterpiece to listen to now, like the intro bass line to Let there be more light.
