Solid advice. These are the exact things you need to go out on the road. As far as all yall green young bucks asking how to get hooked up with a welder, go work some shop jobs as a laborer/helper/floor sweeper and start talking/networking with the welders. I used to work a year on the road and then come back home and work shop jobs just to see my friends and family for the holidays and "take time off". Even if that welder is working in the shop I promise he knows where you can get a job out in the field or even might take you with him. The old timers are the best. Talk to them and listen to every single word they have to say. That's how I got out on the road. Now I've got his book with every single contact he's ever made over 40 years worth of welding. All I have to say usually is, "this guy told me to call you" and they say, "well if he taught you we know you're good then". But just as the same as Austin said, I can promise you if you're always late, bad attitude, lazy, and a know it all you aren't coming out into the field with me. I can promise yall those good attributes Austin mentioned will get you further in this industry then any welding rig truck will. As far as pay it just depends on the particular job. At least you arent making minimum wage making McFlurries at the golden arches. Hope this helps.

I can’t stress this enough! As a helper, do some helping. I can’t even count how many helpers I’ve had that don’t help.

Excellent advise brother! My dad had a saying, it's not always WHAT you know, it's WHO you know. In other words, bring a positive attitude and people are more likely to give you opportunities, meaning WORK.

Hey Brother i appreciate the videos you put out. I like even more you are a UA member! I can see the pride and integrity in your presentation. Unlike other non union rig welders out there. I myself am a pipefitter out of Local 44. Keep up the good work.

I just started as a Welders helper, earning twice what I was in other jobs and had no experience. Just referred by a friend. You need Construction Industry Card, Manual Handling Certificate, Abrasive Wheels certificate just to get on the job, then steel toe cap boots, work trousers, long sleeves, companies should provide personal protective equipment but if not then hard hat and visor or welders helmet, luminous vests, thick gloves, Stanley blade to cut off end caps, hand file, grinders if not supplied, wax temperature pen, sunglasses or eye protection.

Thanks for the advice. I plan on taking welding at the trade school for the next 2 years. But I still plan to start as a helper so I can start building my network.

Great advice. I would tell a fella that's wanting to break out to save double what he thinks he's gonna need. Just my opinion.

Austin a few weeks ago I followed a rig welder a few blocks. We couldn't talk long, so after words I left a card on his window if he ever needed a helper. As someone with a lil experience but wanting to get into it the right way would you say I'm on the right track. Just doing what I can to meet rig welders and trying to be a helper, I actually have all the things I need like you said now. Just trying to make that transition, any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks.
