Hands down one of the greatest artist of our generation.
D'Angelo is the New King of Soul....Not just The Godfather of "Neo-Soul, " (whether he likes to be call that or
Right next to the original God-Father of "Soul, " James Brown.
D'Angelo is sitting on his thrown among all the other greats.

Posted this on Rolling Stone, called "Reasons for 5", but really, like Questlove, my early "historical argument" for the album...
- The musicianship on this album is of the caliber I actually thought was lost.
- Virtuosic singing, songwriting, musicianship on multiple insts, arrangement production from a single person, at a historical level (and collaborators)
- The idea that like Sgt. Pepper it could actually be a "call to arms" to fellow musicians - I've noticed the Twitters of many top "stars" talking about it highly. Similarly, it puts most of the "classics" made over the last 10-15 years in a new light - as if we've been settling for less, esp. in the singing and guitar work, sheer detail and wielding both power and subtlety equally well.
- It also feels as if it folds time, the implication if R&B and soul was never re-routed by technology in the 80's.
- All the legends it would (presumably) delight, from Stevie to Jimi to Marvin to Prince and Sly, but that it also transfigures the source material, which I can't say about anyone else - it transcends imitation or retro explorations.
- Far from being "introverted" as reviewers have said, almost all the songs have extroverted messages/lyrics, speaking on social issues and love = its breadth and ambition is actually wider than Voodoo. It ranges from militant to extremely vulnerable.
- The red-hot timing with Ferguson and other recent movements, esp. of "1000 Deaths" and "Charade".
- The comeback story - highly improbable. Feels more powerful and current than Marvin and Midnight Love, Dylan's several, Johnny Cash's late albums?
