One thing that's difficult for people to understand is, while there is a standard register of a language, used in text books and based on historical use of language, this standard register exists mostly for academic purposes or formal settings. The real language, the way people speak, isn't as rigid or unyielding. Linguists like to describe language and its use. English teachers or other prescriptivists try to insist it should be only one way to be correct. This is wrong. What they are teaching you is what the formal/standard register use is but there's nothing wrong with regional dialects, idiomatic uses or changes over time. That's life.
