101 Episode 1 - Gouache 101 for beginners

Показать описание
In this episode of my new "101s" series, I cover all the basics of (waterbased) gouache that a beginner to it might want to know or need to know. This isn't intended to be all encompassing - it covers the basics and shows some common misconceptions e.g. trying to use it for wet-in-wet methods. My 101s series will be very occasional but will cover the basics of different techniques or groups of techniques.
Starting out with gouache, you may find the following products useful - I've searched out the best prices I can find, which are correct as of 30th July 2016. Please note that these are Amazon Associate Scheme links, which are explained in the video.
748 Zinc White (37mL tube) - can be added at 7-15% to any watercolour to turn it into a basic gouache - this could be a cost-effective place to start:
Winsor & Newton Introductory Designer's Gouache Set - this has 10 x 14mL tubes and is phenomenal value even at full price.
Winsor & Newton Designer's Gouache Primary Colours Set - this has 6 x 14mL tubes and, again, is amazing value - this is the set I first started with myself:
I find cold-press watercolour paper the best for gouache myself - I think 100% cotton papers have a texture that seems to hold on to the paint a little better, so I recommend Saunders Waterford paper, which I find gouache works well on. This is my personal opinion and I have not been given anything in return for recommending this product, but it is a beautiful paper that I find gouache really works well on. This is a white, cold-press, 140lb, 100% cotton watercolour paper block, 14" x 10":
