Muscle strength is a powerful predictor of mortality that can quickly and inexpensively be assessed by measuring handgrip strength. In a new study, researchers developed cut-off points that apply to the general population, while also considering the correlation of handgrip strength with gender, body height, and aging to be used in medical practice

Excellent. Wish I’d seen this before buying this mainly for my wife. She has small hands and the height of the grip on our basic model isn’t adjustable 😢

Of all places I've learned about hand dynamometers was last year, watching a Japanese weather show. All the weather presenters did the test during their respective time slots during a period of a couple of days. At the end of the tests, they did a tally to compare the results and to find out the winner. Their technique wasn't the proper one, but it was still funny to watch and it gave an idea of their strength.

This made me curious enough that I decided to see if I could purchase a tester if the price was reasonable. They cost much less than expected.

I have small arms and I was sure I wouldn't go past 100lbs, but much to my surprise I think my first test was at least 115lbs. (52KG). On rare day it can go up to 57Kg 125lbs, but most times it's between 110 and 115lbs. I'm in my early 40's. I guess I can attribute that to my cycling and cross country skying and other activities. I think my highest ever was 136 lbs (62kg), but I was cheating because I was standing up and my arm was straight. I think my motivating factor was pretending to attempt to break the plastic handle haha.

TIP: I noticed that the numbers may read much lower if the hand is dry. It's best if it's slightly humid.

if i adjust it like that i am putting most of my strength pinching the bottom piece with my fingers which gives me no reading and if i move it up enough so my fingers clear that part i get a much higher reading.
