Not to mention that you can also pedal consistently even on the descents until you hace reached a crazy and brutal amount of speed before starting losing traction and bouncing in the saddle

I think they do it to save watts as well. A larger chainring with correspondingly larger cog in the rear will take less power to go the same speed due to less friction and bend in the chain. You can feel this when you’re in the small chainring vs big one for the same gear ratio.

I started in 2010 with a classoc 53-39 until the standard changed ro compact chainsets of 50-34 and no way I would ever go back to that!

Same for my 11-34 cassette ocer the 11-28 i used to have 😮

When I was racing in the 80's the 'standard' bike fit was 52/42 front and 11 or 12 to 28 on the rear! For our local 10 most riders would wind on either a 54 or 56! No cadence measuring kit back then tho! 😂 Track racing was almost exclusively 54+ on the front!

i'm 51 and I still ride a 53/39 x 11-25 although I prefer a 12-25... but did I miss something? If there was a change, I'm glad to see it coming back full circle to normal gearing. What people fail to realize is that you can ride any gear you like at any age, as long as you train and train right. So much of cycling is not even on the bike. Diet, sleep, stretching, calisthenics, training weaknesses.

I remember racing the tour de l'abitibi which is a juniors race racing junior gearing which was typically 52x14 to make the restrictions. Pretty sure we were spinning at 110rpm in the pack.

54-11 is what I have on my recumbent highracer (2×28"); but I'm not a pro, so I use this gear rather on downhill parts rather than on the flats.

They've realised that spinning at 100+ rpm on a smaller gear was a waste of energy. Armstrong made spinning popular so people followed - before all the doping shit came out.
I raced as an amateur in the early to mid 1980s. No one rode with a big ring less than 52 and small rings were

Also in thr peleton you can ride the 14 or 16 which is more efficient than 11 or stupid 10

I cannot even max out 50-11. That"s why for now I have 50-12 in my 8 speed Claris. My cassette is 12-28 8 speed, perfect where I live which is not so much a hilly place.

I don’t understand why regular slow schlubs don’t want even bigger chainrings than the pros- our cadences aren’t nearly as high and we ride tailwinds far more often.

That's assuming you can actually get to 110RPM on a 54-11 on flat ground

One thing I'm not understanding though is why my road bike is faster with a larger ring upfront but my tt bike is faster with a smaller chain ring upfront, both bikes are 8kg and both are aero bikes but I guess the tt is further up the aero scale than the road bike 🤷‍♂️
