Add fractions with unlike denominators by creating area models

In this lesson you will learn how to add fractions with unlike denominators by creating area models.

ADDITIONAL MATERIALS

STANDARDS

VA.CE.4.5.b add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers having like and unlike denominators; and

VA.CE.5.6.a solve single-step and multistep practical problems involving addition and subtraction with fractions and mixed numbers; and

CCSS.5.NF.A.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)

FL.MAFS.5.NF.1.1 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. For example, 2/3 + 5/4 = 8/12 + 15/12 = 23/12. (In general, 𝘢/𝘣 + 𝘤/𝘥 = (𝘢𝘥 + 𝘣𝘤)/𝘣𝘥.)

IN.6.C.2 Compute with positive fractions and positive decimals fluently using a standard algorithmic approach.

IN.5.C.4 Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators, including mixed numbers.

TEKS.6.2.D order a set of rational numbers arising from mathematical and real-world contexts; and

TEKS.5.3.K add and subtract positive rational numbers fluently; and

TEKS.5.3.H represent and solve addition and subtraction of fractions with unequal denominators referring to the same whole using objects and pictorial models and properties of operations;
