Is There a Future for Web Developers? With AI Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning, will there still be a need for individual web designers & developers or will we be phased out in the next 5 to 10 years?

If you're a web developer or looking to get into the web development field either working for a fortune 500 company, boutique web design agency or as a freelance web developer, this is something you might be asking yourself or googling for answers.

There have been massive advances with artificial intelligence and machine learning over the years with Chess masters being defeated by AI, Go Players being defeated by AI & Poker players also being defeated by Artificial Intelligence.

This has sparked the debate and conversation over whether fields like web design & development, doctors, lawyers and other fields might be at risk due to advances in technology. This also comes at a time when we are getting closer to creating a Quantum Computer and other major advances in current day Super Computers.

The singularity is what concerns many, including people like Elon Musk, Bill Gates and many others who feel we might be changing the way the world works.

For those who are worried about whether web developers have a future or not, my saying is: Even with all of the new web technologies, drop and drag software/interfaces, etc. someone STILL has to write/rewrite the relevant text for the site as well as upload the relevant images, fields etc; someone also has to design/arrange the site according to need; insert the RIGHT forms such as registration, contact, databases, etc. for some sites. Also, someone has to update the website regularly, proofread and keep it up-to-date! The above things are A LOT of work and that's where YOU the web developer would come in. Multiply this by MANY MANY different TYPES of companies needing SOMEBODY to do these things if they want more people to know that they exist, where to find them, how to buy what they are selling, etc.

Here is another reason I think that web developers will still be needed. Despite all of the great resources out, the easy to use frameworks/CMSs, and even with all of the inspiring and encouraging video, etc. the vast majority of people are still scared of programming. Many people still think that it's difficult or think it's boring. It is like my friend the other day:

Me: Hey, why not go into web development?

Friend (takes ONE look at Javascript): Man, that stuff is hard. I ain't doing that. I will stick to drums and busking. LOL

I also tried to get my niece to pursue web development and she takes a VERY long time to respond to my questions regarding it and she doesn't want to talk about it. LOL

So, these are among some of the common responses I get and it speaks to why there is a shortage which means that if somebody CAN do programming and truly wants to get into the industry; whether it involves web programming or otherwise, such person would be needed somewhere.

I think people are overrating AI and machine language. According with past predictions we should had flying cars by now and the moon and mars as vacation destination and none of that happened.
It will take a long time for AI to replace web developers. It will just replace manual labor even more but highly specialized work will take time.

Depends on where you work and their 'definition' of what a web developer is. With downsizing and reduced budget as a common business practice, businesses want folks to do more - with less. With that in mind, try and get a programmer to edit CSS, or build a framework template, or configure a server for web including server hardening, SSL, Shib + whatever framework you're using, third party integration, AWS integration, GA/GTM, light programming, CMS administration, WCAG management, etc. It's not that they can't, it's that most believe these are things beneath them (yes, broad generalization, but we all know why generalizations exist). Businesses will always need a web developer, unless they're small and can get by with WIX or similar service. I had a IT manager once tell me that sys admins would be replaced - that was in 1997. IMO, stay a generalist and you'll always find a decent job.

Hi i am a web developer, mostly work on front-end. I've tried many times to work as freelance, but not got as many clients as i expected, so finally i moved to work on a web farm, is it good or bad. Because working under someone or some company, i really don't feel happy.

Robots and Machines can't make Critical dissensions or make a Art compositions. You need a human being to accomplish that. Web Developer jobs will require more skills Soft skills are more necessary as ever.
