Planting is very simple, but taking care of them requires a lot of experience

I bought a prickly pear cactus fruit at the grocery store. I used the seeds to start my own cactus crop and it was easier than I thought it would be. The flowers are beautiful and then I am rewarded with huge fruit. I live on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi and the climate here allows good growth even though we have more rain than the cacti need. Life is wonderful!

I have HUGE cactuses in my backyard, over 10 feet tall. I harvest the pears and make homemade jelly out of them 👌🏼👌🏼

Prickly pears grow wild in a beach access area where I live in Melbourne Beach, FL. I have harvested some. The fruit and the juice are excellent. I now have in pots 21 seedlings that I have been growing (from the seeds of one fruit) the past few months. I have also pruned some of the wild bushes, of which my son has planted some clippings in pots in his back yard in Orlando. They are showing signs of growth, showing me that they are very easy to grow. I have enjoyed the prickly pear leaves prepared by chefs at resorts in MX. Everyone should be growing fruits and vegetables of all sorts!

I absolutely love prickly pear fruit! It's so sweet and tasty. I've also had the leaves cut and roasted and put into tacos. Not much flavor in them though.

So interesting! I love tunas ( what they are called in Mexico). All of them-green, red, yellow- have a slightly different taste. My grandma used to make a candy called queso de tuna ( the flesh boiled down). It was wonderful! Thank you!

I’ve made prickly pear wine. Good stuff. Used to put away 10 gallons of prickly pear juice every year.

This was great! What hard working and hard job these folks have!
Soon I will be traveling to the lower states and hope to find some cactus to eat along the way. I just found this channel and hope you have more on desert foods. How to pick them was helpful and learning ways to prepare at home would be fun and helpful as well.

Fruiting cactus for gardens can be divided into three basic groups, prickly pear, apple cactus, and vine cactus
