"The Whisperer in Darkness" is a novella by H.P. Lovecraft, written in 1930 and first published in 1931. It is a blend of horror and science fiction, exploring themes of cosmic horror, alien life, and human insignificance in the universe.

The story is narrated by Albert N. Wilmarth, a professor at Miskatonic University in Arkham, Massachusetts. Wilmarth becomes intrigued by reports of strange occurrences and sightings of alien creatures in the remote hills of Vermont. He begins a correspondence with Henry Akeley, a recluse who claims to have encountered these extraterrestrial beings, known as the Mi-Go, and has gathered evidence of their existence.

As their correspondence progresses, Akeley describes increasingly disturbing encounters and sends Wilmarth photographs, recordings, and samples of strange fungi. He reveals that the Mi-Go are from the planet Yuggoth (Pluto) and are mining Earth for rare minerals. Akeley also claims that the Mi-Go can transport human brains in specially designed cylinders to Yuggoth, allowing them to experience the cosmos.

Wilmarth decides to visit Akeley in Vermont, despite his initial skepticism and growing fear. Upon arriving at Akeley's isolated farmhouse, he finds his host in a frail and fearful state, surrounded by the trappings of his research. Akeley insists that the Mi-Go are benevolent and urges Wilmarth to join him in a journey to Yuggoth.

However, Wilmarth soon realizes that Akeley's behavior is suspicious and that he is being manipulated. He discovers a hidden cylinder containing a human brain and pieces together the horrifying truth: Akeley's body has been taken over by the Mi-Go, and they plan to transport Wilmarth's brain to Yuggoth.

Wilmarth escapes the farmhouse and flees back to Arkham, deeply traumatized by his experience. He remains haunted by the knowledge that humanity is not alone in the universe and that the Mi-Go continue their activities in secret.
