The original Spiderwyck was really good and stayed true to the books. We shall see.

I can't put my finger on it, but these new creature designs feel so "samey". Every fantasy movie has the same feel with these designs

The full length movie was terrific. No, it can't be topped by a series.

The way that it’s NOTHING like the original. It’s almost laughable like the name should be Wickspider or something 😂

As a big fan of the books, I was really hoping they'd do a remake that included all the things the movie left out. This looks like a cool fantasy show, and I'll check it out for that reason, but it's a shame to see almost no recognizable scenes in this trailer. I'm glad that they at least kept Jared's interest in drawing.

There was one movie made, and it was absolutely awesome.
I hope this series is good, too. My family loves the books so we'll see.

I remember this being annouced as a Disney Plus series all the way back in late 2020!
Never thought I'd ever see ROKU of all companies pick this series up.🤨

Well it's better here than on Tubi.🤷🏾‍♂️

Disney didn't make this like the other comment claims. They commissioned it. Paramount Television made it since Paramount owns the Spiderwick IP. Disney Plus let it go because whatever reasons. My best guess is cost cutting since they don't own the IP.

I finished the series the other day. I have quite a few thoughts:
The series was quite fantastic actually, there were places where it felt fantastical and didn't reveal too much and thereby losing that awe and wonder at the idea of a hidden and fantastical world around us. The characters though different from the book felt like they had a deeper sense of the character. The actors did an amazing job with that! I was impressed with Jared's actor, he did an amazing job with the amount of conflict he's in and feeling distant, and without giving loads away, how he brings that into his approach to the Faërie world. I was deeply impressed and moved by that. The actor who played Mulgarath did an amazing job, he maintained and strong sense of being an ogre throughout the series really well.

SPOILERS ALERT FROM HERE ONWARDS!!

On the other hand there are places where improvement will be necessary. For one, what happened to the boggart and the lore surrounding that?! What happened to the goblins?! They barely even showed a troll! Same thing with sprites, they showed one sprite and then even at the end when hundreds of these sprites were meant to come on, all we got were these glowing firefly things and had no details whatsoever. One thing that ticked me off and disappointed me was this idea of the "Goblin Market". It sent my imagination running thinking of goblins and a strange town and what the building could look like, but all we got was a hag disguised as a human and for the market there was a caravan. I despise it when series do these things. Either you show a market with Goblins or you don't do it at all. That really bugged me. Likewise when they entered the woods in the Faërie world it didn't feel quite as fantastical. It was mostly moving trees. They couldn't have done a lot of things there. Like why not show a clump walking along somewhere for perhaps have a stream and show a nixie washing their hair or doing nixie stuff. There were so many things that could have been done but wasn't. If anything it felt like they were trying to keep things on budget and as a result it felt rather shallow with regard to those things. I also have to say the field guide felt kinda boring. It was big and clumsy rather than inviting and full of mysteries and enchanting imagery like the film has (I'd love to know where they put that field guide version they should make copies and publish it the art was exquisite). Also Aunt Lucinda walking around in that flower dress just made the series feel like it was on a tight budget and kinda awkward and weird. They could have made that kinda cool and have sprites perhaps looking up and flying about her or sitting on one of her shoulders.
Then there is also the cinematography and script. The opening felt very clumsy and unfaërie like. Introducing a series' story should never begin with speaking directly with your "viewers", that is something you just should never do and this showed clearly why. The movie demonstrated perfectly how you could open this with the making of the field guide. The series could have opened with something to do with that and making the Faërie world feel closer and thus causing the Field Guide to be more of a central character and just how serious it is. I'm not sure if I like the idea of them running around trying to find the missing pieces of the guide, because the whole point of Jared is that he reads the guide and because he knows secrets about the Faërie Realm he is then in all the more the danger, but maybe he'll learn from Spiderwick (please, if there are any showrunners who are reading this, for the love of God if you do the next series after this don't give Arthur Spiderwick the Luke Skywalker "sulking because I failed someone", that'll be boring, if you have Jared with him yet give the character conflict but having him act like a mentor to Jared would make this million times better and have them go around and Jared realising the beauty of the Faërie realm and how seeing the beauty in that world makes him stronger to face off against Mulgarath) which would be really cool and draw the series into actually what it's about which is a Field Guide opening Jared up to realising the fantastical world around him. I have to also say the music needs work. Sure you can have the occasional moment when a normal song comes on but for goodness sake, this is a series about faëries not about gangs and looking gangster. Get a composer and get some beautiful music going. The music will always be the heart of the series it will be what makes the darks darker and the lights enchanting. Hire a composer for the other seasons please!

I could go on a lot more, but I think I biggest fault with this is that it didn't have enough Faërie life in it. I hope they do more in the next seasons which I'd really love to it. I enjoyed this season a lot and I found parts of it quite enchanting, it just needs adjusting so the fantastical aspect flows through it nicely. Looking forward to the next seasons and seeing the Dwarves and Elves! I will definitely give this a rewatch, good job to all the crew and actors you were amazing and I hope one day to shake your hands :)

The authors Black and Diterlizzi helped rewrite this. Surprisingly new and entertaining! I hope they finish the story in the next season

Definitely looks like they're having to change up or expand the story for the series.
I sort of understand if they're trying to stand out from the film, the only issue with that is the film was a near perfect adaption so I'm not sure how this will improve it.

Seems like Mulgarath with be interacting a lot more with the main characters with some grander plan extending beyond the unseen magical world.
The field guide being spread out for Jared to find is an interesting decision. On the one hand it'd slowly introduce him (and the audience) to the magic, rather than learning everything instantly. On the other, the point was the book was protected in the circle round the house, and not outside where Mulgarath would've been able to get it.

1:51 I don't know if that's Mulgarath disguised as two different women. Or is the show making the Goblins shapeshifters too? I really hope not as it feels a cheap alternative to the awesome goblin designs from the book & film.
As for the one CG character we see a bit of, Thimbletack, looks pretty cool. I like the borrower like clothes and accessories.

I guess we'll have to wait and see if this series pulls it off or not. It'll be hard not to compare it with the film, since that did a pretty stellar job, both in casting (Freddie Highmore playing Jared & Simon was pretty impressive), and the effects that really hold up and adapted the books illustrations in a cool realistic way.

I just finished watching and loved it! Sure, it's different from the books, but it kept the most important parts. It's really hard to make a series out of a book series without changing anything, since books rely so heavily on introspection as well. I think they found a rather good solution to creating a denser storyline by having Mulgarath act as a human and integrating himself in Henson's society. Good job, I can't wait for next season! 😍❤️

this is a very diverse cast of characters lol. definitely not chosen on purpose to tick some boxes

It’s equally insulting to viewers and black authors that they decided to race swap a bunch of white characters from a children’s book instead of just adapting one of the near endless awesome stories written about black characters by black authors.

They should advertise that the authors reimagined their bestselling book for the series, otherwise people will be confused why the story changed
