Welcome back for another video on the London Crossings, this one is specific to the Silvertown Tunnel with it being constructed in 2020.

With lockdown still in place, I thought I'd try a new style of video, let me know what you think!

Great series of videos Ashley; very informative. Nice to have varied styles. Love your graphics/maps.

I think a new road Silvertown Tunnel should be built to relieve the pressure of heavy traffic using the A102 Blackwall Tunnels. And not forgetting the new Lower Thames Crossing from M25 to A2 & M2 in Kent.

The only real benefits of this tunnel is that its big enough for buses and lorries. Buses are a part of public transport therefore its fine but i am concerned about the other crossings further eastwards like Dagenham/Rainham and Beckton linking Thamesmead, Woolwich and Erith

There have been a lot of of green lit East London crossings. In Beckton there is a bridge to nowhere and in Beckton and Thamesmead there are roundabouts with an exits to metal fences. These were for a proposed 2 level bridge for Ringway 2 with the London Ringways scheme which was to replace the north and south circulars and the Woolwich ferry.

I can't wait for this. I've lived next to Blackwall tunnel on the north side for over 25 years. That tunnel just has to deal with too much traffic on a daily basis.

I'm watching this vid 10 Sept 2022 and had never heard of this project until seeing it mentioned briefly in the Metro newspaper.

Thanks for all that detail about an under-reported project. Interesting about the extra charges for more-polluting vehicles. If they could manage to make it 'electric vehicles only' it would be good for cyclists - until they hit the ordinary roads at each end...

as I frequently pass the site I've noticed They seem to be starting the preparation works on the sites that are being used for the crossing i.e. currently removing buildings and putting fencing up albeit it's currently temporary fencing, so they do seem to be making somewhat a start to the project on the north side I've the river

Actually I'm quite comfortable I think with this project because it is strongly public transport orientated, but have you never heard of traffic evaporation? Which is actually quite alive and well in London, and TFL is really good at. Some of your thinking sometimes may seem a bit 1960s or pre Jane Jacobs.

Thanks for the info- I had indeed not heard of the silvertown tunnel before today. Building new roads in 2020 seems kind of crazy. Not clear how that will help reduce emissions by the 10%/year or so that is now needed. If it was public transport only it might make some sense, but spending a billion on a road tunnel and then adding a few bike racks and cycle lanes around about is really rather missing the point. A billion on active transport, roadspace reallocation, and public transport, with a few car parking spaces and car-washes scattered about is more like where we need to be headed.

Am asking myself why do they have to bring traffic to one area ?

We are again failing to recognise the disastrous levels of emissions that Silvertown will create. Climate needs to be put first.

Interesting stuff, thanks for sharing

One suggestion: it was distracting when you had to keep looking at your laptop for the information, if you could arrange your notes next to the camera you wouldn’t need to keep looking away

There’s a bus that goes underneath the tunnel how ?

What a waste of money my tax is paying for this over the next 25 years KHAN should be sacked over this waste of money 25 years of toll money to pay for it disgusting

The way Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock dished out dodgy government contracts during covid the dodgy contracts and brown envelopes for this project will be mouth watering. Over £2 billion will have the Tory party fighting each other to get the contracts approved.
