Hi Rob i had the same issue with my wife's L494 land rover, exactly the same reply from land rover regarding the start stop battery and the backup battery in the TCU (telematics control unit). I do have SDD software and it actually pointed to the speaker 1. This is actually a independent speaker mounted up in the centre over head console. If you drop the console carefully without damaging the headlining you will see the small speaker behind, this is the one that that the control speaks to you too if you subscribe to the Incontrol functionality and hit the SOS button in an emergency. If the wiring is anything like the L494 the speaker will be fed by a pair of wires, which if you look closely they are a twisted pair like aniseed twist, probably a black and black with a trace colour. If you unplug the speaker first check that you have 4-8ohms across the pins, typical for a speaker, if you haven't that could be the problem, if ok that pair of wires should go back to that TCU as a twisted pair. If you examine the main plug on the TCU and look closely you should see that twisted pair that runs to the speaker. When you have found it you can unplug that connector and test back up that cable to the speaker with it connected and disconnected also checking for short circuits and short circuits against ground, if the cable is good with the speaker connected you should see the 4-8ohm across the pair. In my car I had two faults when the windscreen was replaced the twisted pair was damaged and also the speaker for some reason had gone high resistance. Speaker was replaced and a new speaker wire ran in from the speaker at the overhead console through the headlining back to the TCU. Both ends were spliced in eliminating the original wire. Without using the SDD software the TCU was happy seeing the speaker when plugged back up and the SOS functionality went out instantly. I hope this helps as the dealers and experts were useless !!...Regards Richard.

I have been reading, as I am retired as a mechanic and all I do is read now, that there maybe a fault with the telemetric unit. I watched all the things you did and they were on the list of things to check. You did your homework! Every box ticked! Either the cell portion of the telemetric unit has failed or you have a can-bus fault. And no I am not an armchair warrior sir! Just love to read and think out issues. Awesome videos and you seem like a genuine hearted bloke. Thanks!

Honestly mate great video and great science, even though you couldnt fix it, you still walked us through how you tried to solve the problem. For everyone out there trying to learn, this is the real things engineers see everyday! Best way to learn.

Rob, when you're back looking at the Mk1 Golf build maybe you would get a chance to show us the Lexus/Supra that you mentioned in the video. It would be interesting to get a look at it. Electronic problems can be very frustrating for someone who is mechanically minded and can really test patience. Enjoying the content.

Owned an evoque for just over a year, Nothing but trouble. Even my garage man joked to me one day, The two best days you own a Range Rover is the day you buy it and the day you sell it 😀

The little red Polo looks gorgeous, I really like your attention to detail, making sure every car is as good as it can be before you sell them.

Hi Rob and thanks for my favourite you tube channel. Its good that you tell us when things go wrong. This is a REALLY GOOD Evoque if it only has 1 error message! If you fix it another will be along shortly! Its just a standard feature of JLR. It IS the speaker btw, speaker 1 is the one the SOS service uses for messages. Could be the wiring ( most likely) or the speaker. I have seen both tbh. For ref hard resets are NOT a good idea on these, but if you must you were well advised to give it 10 Mins! Much better to use a decent scanner (Launch x431v works well on these but the maxi is great too)) or as you did pop along and get it checked by someone who has one..
