Sigma MC-11 Autofocus Tested On The Sony a7S III

In this video I test the eye autofocus on the Sony a7S III with the Sigma MC-11 adapter and a few of the ART lenses (the 20mm, 35mm and 50mm). I've found that it works brilliantly so far, I hope you enjoy!

I'm looking at picking up one of these adapters for my Sigma SA lenses. I absolutely love my lenses, but as you pointed out the mount is probably at the end of it's life with the discontinuation of the Sigma SD Quattro (H). My SD1 is still my main camera, and probably will be for years to come, but it has limitations and the idea that I can pick up a used A7iii or an a6600 and get a massive improvement in autofocus, tracking, image stabilization and high iso performance without needing to buy a whole second set of lenses saves me thousands of dollars and means I can bring both systems out with me without needing to pack two sets of lenses. Even if the stills performance isn't stellar, it would be very difficult for it to be worse the SD1's autofocus which can't hit the broad side of a barn.

Some useful insight Harv. Did you happen to notice any noise from the MC-11 as it was focusing in video mode?

Thank you so much for testing this, Harv! Really helpful info; I'd hazard a guess that the MC-11/Sigma glass combo would also enable good autofocus on the FX6? That might be a good way of getting optical stabilisation using the Sigma 24-70 2.8!

4:30 simple. Focus by wire when trying manual focus is terrible. Particularly in Sigma's DG DN when it's MF is not linear.

In one of my phone calls to Sigma's office in New York during perhaps 2019, a Sigma agent told me openly that Sony had shared its autofocus algorithms with Sigma. But yeah, Sigma apparently is a "thorn in the side" of Canon [04:53].

Older Sigma 105mm 2.8 DG Macro hsm lens and a7siii ... will mc-11 work? My older metabones ver 2 won't?

Thx for the great vid! The only reason why you should consider E mount Sigma Art Lenses is that they are weather sealed. The MC11 adapter is not.
Question, how noisy are the AF motors on these lenses? I have the E mount 28 1.4 and 40 1.4 and the 28 is quite noisy :(

Thanks for the test! I'll go for the MC-11 then... Cheaper than buying again all my primes art lenses in E-Mount. The only lens that I'm not sure about is my Sigma Sport Zoom 70-200mm. Have you ever tried this one ? Thanks again. Greetings from France.

Thank you. I wish to buy it. I am actually from the Nikon ecosystem and just bought a sony camera.
Do sigma lenses comparatively cost less compared to native sonys?
Thank you very much

Hola, podrías hacer esta prueba, pero en la A7IV, para ver que tal funciona

If anyone ask why don't you buy Sony glass then they have not ever looked at the price of Sony glass. I believe Sony is looses out on a lot sales to Sigma and Tamron because of there pricing.

It clearly says on the adapter that it was made only for Sigma glass. Because in that configuration is no longer an EF protocol lens, becomes Sony native. With Canon glass, it has to stick to EF communication, which is indeed less than ideal.

Great video! Almost like it was tailored made for folks like me that have Sony and Panasonic gear. I use EF glass on a Metabones with my GH5S. Great to know if I buy Sigma EF glass that it will also work well on my Sony gear with my MC-11.

Hi Harv! I love your content, brother. Much Appreciated. :)

I hope you didn't already answer this below! But have you tried any Tamron EF glass with video? It's clear most lens work with photography, that's cool, but I have Sigma and Tamron EF and crossing my fingers :(

Very informative video - thanks! I've recently upgraded to a Sony full-frame from APS-C, and had been trying to find out without much luck if the MC-11 would let me use Canon lenses as they seem to be available much cheaper used than Sony's. The lack of video AF for non-Sigma lenses is disappointing, but exactly what I wanted know - their documentation is infuriatingly vague on compatability, which must be deliberate.

Hi, why my MC 11 can't autofocus? Sony A6400 - canon 24-70 2.8 L. Anyone got this problem?

Hey there - Do you know if continuous autofocus works with a sigma 18-35 + MC-11 on the A7siii?

Harv, thanks for covering the very neglected MC-11. I've been using mine for many years on my a6300, a6500 and a6400 with very good auto-focus results. And recently with my a7S3, also with very good auto-focus results. I also have a very similar opinion of Sigma glass, especially the Art series. I've been very happy with those lenses. However, I noticed in your video what has come to annoy me with this setup. Many of those EF Art lenses are very noisy in autofocus mode when obtaining audio from a camera mounted microphone. Something that I have not experienced with the native Sony glass that I own. As a result I'll be buying the newer Sigma E mount Art series glass in the future for use under those circumstances. That said I'm in no hurry to get rid of my EF glass, because in this new age of mirrorless mounts, the EF lenses can be mounted onto any of these bodies and can always be used in manual mode or with an external focus motor. Thanks again Harv for the video.
