Labor Day is more than a day off at the end of the summer. Learn the origins of the national holiday and its global counterpart, International Workers’ Day on May 1, during the next Iowa Stories presentation hosted by the State Historical Society of Iowa’s Research Center in Iowa City. Two University of Iowa experts in labor history, Shelton Stromquist and John McKerley, will discuss the holiday’s roots in the “Great Upheaval,” as well its traditions of parades and public demonstrations – many of which are chronicled in the historical society’s Iowa Labor Collection and recently digitized interviews from the Iowa Labor History Oral Project.
