Why Toy Story 4 Is A Terrible Sequel

Toy Story 4 Is Great but its actually also bad if that makes sense

4th movie completely defeats the purpose of toy story 3 ending. Andy gives woody to Bonnie hoping she would take good care of him only for her to not giving a crap about him. Also buzz seems more like a side character while rest of the gang barely have any roles and more screen time is dedicated to the new characters. They also seem out of character. Buzz is suddenly dumb(would be more fitting for Rex), Bo Peeps personality is much more fitting for Jessie etc. Also remember how in toy story 2 woody considered staying with Jessie in the museum while abandoning buzz and rest of his friends? Thats literally what he did in toy story 4 so basically defeating the purpose of toy story 2 as well.

Good animation doesn't excuse bad writing and storytelling. I didn't watch this movie after seeing it on TV. It left a bad taste for me unlike the trilogy. Woody was broken, Buzz was broken, Bo was broken, the original toys were sidelined to push the new ones, that horrible doll got a happy ending. My goodness. It made me cry, not because it's emotional but because it's frustrating and disappointing.

To be honest, Bonnie isn't much out of character for a kid as young as she is, it's actually very normal that some kids have a phase of playing with paper dolls or the weirdest things instead of their toys, but it's just a phase, they always return to the toys. For someone like Woody, who spent YEARS without being touched, suddenly feeling abandoned within less than a year is what gets me. Woody is such a loyal toy to his owner, it sounds weird to me that on his own will he would leave

I don't think that it's even a ' good ' movie. The character assassination of Woody, Buzz and Bo Peep was absolutely atrocious. They completely gaslight the audience on the events of the previous films and the characters. They side track the main cast for their inferior new characters. Gabby Gabby was an awful character and truly an evil villain but still got everything she desired at the end for convenience. So many other problems as well.

The entire franchise was about fulfilling your responsibilities and accepting your fate. The 4th movie is about saying "screw that, I'm gonna be a drifter with this hot chick."

Yeah I don't mention it often cause I'm always worried people will think I'm sexist or something... but I didn't like how Bo Peep is suddenly a super-skilled tough girl. Its not a bad personality (though it IS a very common thing these days, its starting to get a smidge cliché) but its NOTHING like how Bo was in the previous movies. I didn't like the old Bo Peep, but I also don't like the inconsistency... And its not like her time as a lost toy is what changed her, she was shown with that personality in the flashback at the start of the movie.

Not even gonna talk about how much they butchered Buzz's character... like, why doesn't he have a conscious? Why can he suddenly not think logically for himself despite being the most competent in the first three films? Why is he so dumb just for this running gag???

Inconsistent. That's the magic word to describe this movie.

I’ll never forgive what they did to practically every original character in this movie.

- *Woody* (who had once gotten over being Andy’s toy, and embraced being Bonnie’s) was now depressed Andy wasn’t around, and at the end gave up his MAIN character trait of ALWAYS being there for his Kid and his Friends (“No Matter What” - Andy)
- *Buzz* is now a doofus, who kept happening to stumble into the plot when convenient, but ultimately served little to no purpose.
- *Bo Peep* was turned into an arrogant, MEAN, narcissist who continued to dunk on Woody throughout the movie, and talked to him like a misbehaving child.
- *Andy* looked NOTHING like himself from the previous movies.
- *Bonnie* who used to cherish Woody, disregarded him in favor of a spork, and Jessie (who she never had a connection with before like she did Woody).
- *Jessie* who was once a LEADER in the Toy Story gang, was now relegated to hardly even a side character.
- *The Rest of the OG Toy Story Gang* were not even side character’s, they hardly spoke, they just existed in the background (occasionally) only to help at the very end of the movie.

After everything they’ve been through, after all the years we’ve literally grown to know them, they were ALL assassinated by a director and writers who didn’t know, or give half a shit about them. The only thing this movie had going for it was the soundtrack, and the quality of animation. Everything else was nostalgia bait.

I feel like Toy Story 4 is the weaker version of Toy Story 1, if that makes sense. Basically both plots, when broken down to their fundamental basics, center around Woody finding a way to win back his owner's love

The spork plot should've been dropped, and the older Toy Story characters should've went on the mission with Woody to go get Bo Peep, and bring her home with them not stay at the carnival. I would've done the Gabby Gabby character the same way, but have her want to hold Bo hostage at the antique store until she gets Woody's pullstring (but she never does). It would've been a much better movie.

The Girlfriend™ Trope is legitimately my least favorite trope in movies, books, literally everything. Where you ship off one of the original and primary characters with a girlfriend for that "bitter sweet" ending or some crap. It happened in Toy Story, it happened in How to Train your Dragon.
It isn't always a girlfriend, but most of the time it is and I don't ever want to see this again, thank you.

I was actually about to punch my TV after i saw woody become a lost toy. It goes against EVERYTHING he stood for.

What upsets me the most is the villain. As someone who HAS been manipulated, gaslighted and lied to it pissed me off that Gabby Gabby was given a happy ending. When she was mentally, emotionally and even physically abusive towards Woody the moment she meets him. Manipulating him using what she learns about him from Forky. It's down right SCARY seeing how she legit is FORGIVEN and given a happy ending when people LIKE her ruin lives. Abuse is a cycle and abusers don't HAVE to be forgiven. That is NOT a safe lesson to teach kids. It's dangerous and ends up trapping people IN that CYCLE of abuse. It's clear Pixar didn't know what they were doing with her character, but it was done badly.

She reminds of the the Red Queen from Alice Through the Looking Glass. Another character that did NOT deserve forgiveness or a redemption arc after we see her mentally, emotionally and physically abuse her lover the whole movie. I'm so DONE with this weird trope. When you write a villain like this redemption arcs are nearly impossible to do unless you KNOW what your doing and even then not everyone SHOULD forgive them.
