Understanding your current position is the key to success. Look for opportunities now and execute them well so that new doors can open. Before that big imaginary goal takes place, smaller real projects need to be well executed.

Follow me:

Experience how I paint the human figure. I explain every thought of the process, and you will see me apply every mark on the canvas in my latest video:

To see me in action painting a portrait of my wife from start to finish, while sharing my thought process in almost 20 hrs of instruction, click the link below:

Witness my whole process of drawing the figure, from the construct stage to the final layers of rendering. You will hear my every thought and see every mark of charcoal on the paper.

I had the same experience at art school. My professors were devout post-modernists, and they viewed and critiqued me as a "throw-back". Even as I explained that I thought one should possess a technical background in various mediums before you can break new ground conceptually. In retrospect, I would have been better served by seeking out an apprenticeship under a master. Fast forward eleven years later, and I support my family as an artist. Usually land one or two large public sculpture commissions a year, and quite a bit of painting...in the past seven years I have not had a single day where I did not have commissioned or sold work to execute. Its really the best profession on the planet, if one can endure the first five years of hardship that it takes to focus on your art exclusively. I would advise anyone just out of art school that you cannot opt to wait tables or have a day job, then expect to stack the hours necessary to become proficient and successful....you have to set your eyes on 10, 000 hours and endure until you make

THIS one is your best rap for sure! "if you want to take off like a hot air balloon don't take the elevator, you got to take the stairs!" LOVE that one! Because nothing is handed to you, its ALL hard work and pure commitment. Thank you for sharing your insight and experience!

Wow I didn't know that you moved to Italy! Right now I'm studying in Florence at the public academy. I've always been in love with realism and the great old masters like you do, but unfortunately the professors are still a bit stuck with conceptual and abstract art, so I feel a bit insecure.... But your channel and your art is so inspiring to me, I want to find myself and be successful like you in the future!

I needed this, you need to work with what you have, I often get depressed because I’m not in an atelier and don’t have the money to get there. But I need to exhaust the resources that are present

I was the black sheep in art school too I wish I had thought about it the way you present it. I actually did research and a paper on it - Reconstructive post-modernism. ie slow moving trend back to more traditional art styles.

Wondered if you could make a video on finding values in drawings, i find this one of the hardest parts, I'm always so cautious because i don't want to go too dark in areas an then ruin the work? cheers ans thank you
