This was unexpectedly useful info for someone who has been writing for many years and now wants to specialize in copywriting/content writing...starting [almost] at zero. Your point about keeping a portfolio focused is well taken. I'm hoping to break into a niche—something I think I would be good at—but I have almost no experience in it.

One idea I had for building up a portfolio of work was to sign up with Fiverr and Upwork and take on freelance projects for peanuts. The problem with that approach is that it won't build the portfolio I want/need. So now I'm thinking I just want to find white papers from companies in that space and write my own blog posts.

I've been in marketing for 8 years and have dabbled in just about everything in that space but always found my best work was done in copywriting and content creation. The trouble is that it's never been consistent and I've bounced around so much and within so many industries that I don't really have a niche and I don't really have a good portfolio to speak of.
